Need information about this 68

I found a 68 pickup not too far away that has a 250 inline 6 in it. Also has a 3 speed on the column. It is a work truck that didn't even have a radio, it was covered with a plate. It looks in good shape with a little rust but it is restorable.
Can anyone tell me how good the 250 inline 6 is? Are they dependable? I doubt that it would have much power to get down the highway or to haul anything? Correct?
Thanks for the help,
Joe

Re: Need information about this 68

The 6 cyl motors are good dependable motors. They do not have the power of a modern 6 or the economy. They do wear well but in stock form are not really well suited to hiway speeds.60-65 is about as fast as you would want to wind one for long stretches. If you stay with the 6 you will want to upgrade to an HEI ignition(simple swap). If you want performance from a 6 you're looking at big bucks to get semi-V-8 power.
The real question is in the body and frame. If they are good then there are lots of parts avaiable to swap to a V-8.The three speed is a solid dependable piece also but in the column shifted version it is not much on performance. The final drive is 1-1 like most vehicles of the era.Almost any powertrain combo can be installed in one of these trucks but the GM line of the era was very interchangeable.Overdrive trannys and modern EFI can and have been adapted.
I would buy a 6 cyl powered truck since I really like the 6 and don't feel I need a race truck.Like I said the body is the big issue since bodywork and paint can cost almost as much as the rest of the truck parts wise.

Re: Need information about this 68

I had a 74 with a 250 in it and I quickly learned to respect the L6. Plenty of power, I could chug around town all day in 3rd gear but it was wound pretty tight on the superslab. We routinely hauled 1500lb loads to the landfill with that truck. Sold it to a friend but we still do landfill runs with it. It truly is a workhorse.
