automatic transmission

Is it possible to put an automatic transmission in a 1949 pickup with the original engine? Ridiculous, impossible,
difficult?

Thanks, Don

Re: automatic transmission

I would think with the right amount of cussing, welding, grinding, looking on the net and making parts runs anything is possible. I know Transdapt builds tons of different adapters to mount transmissions to engines. I don't know if they build one for your application but I would start there.

Re: automatic transmission

They had a 4 speed hydramatic in 48. You will need to get an adaptor but it will work. I would upgrade to a 235 instead of the 216 and use the 216 valve cover so it looks some what original.

Exactly! That would be the best thing.

Re: automatic transmission

A couple of years ago there was a 53 5 window that had a full pressure 235 with a 700r4 behind it, I never could find out who owned it to ask him about the adapter and I haven't seen the truck since.
Aparently someone makes adapters but I never have been able to find out who.

Re: automatic transmission

One of the vendors makes an adapter to hook later transmissions to the early engines but the 216 would seem to be pretty much of a slug with an automatic behind it.

Here is the link to Buffalo Enterprises that builds one adapter http://www.inliners.org/buffalo/index.htm
