Steering??

i have a 1972 chevy 4x4. and i have a lot of slop in my steering wheel and when i go to turn a corner it just goes like really fast and its really hard to keep on the road. i cant really explain it very well. would that be a bad tie rod or tie rod ends???

Re: Steering??

Tie rods would be my first guess. A contributing factor could also be a worn idler arm and/or Pitman arm. Also, check for play in the steering gear box. These can all kind of play off of each other and make for one wild ride around the twisties!!

Re: Steering??

Essentially what we're saying is "your front end is shot!" Once you get in there, you'll probably end up replacing more than just 1 item...

Re: Steering??

To check you can jack up one front tire and grab it on both sides and push/pull. You will feel the "loosness" of the joints. Look and see what is moving where the joints are. Do this with both sides.
While you are at it you can put a pipe/prybar under the tire and pull up on the pipe to lift the tire. If your ball joints are bad there will be slop there, if they are good it will be tight.
Sounds like you need to check over everything before it takes you down the wrong road.
