Truck History – Purchased April 1999


Yes, I have had the truck for a while now. During the past decade, I really haven’t done a lot to the vehicle. This started as a pretty generic truck, here’s a look at the SPID



Over the years, I’ve replaced the wood bed, swapped out the engine, added a lift and tires, and installed A/C.

Engine: GM Crate 350 HO Deluxe.
HP = 330@5500 RPM
TQ = 380@3800 RPM


SM-465, NP-205 Combo, D-44 Front, Eaton H052 Rear, 4:10 Gears.

Superlift 6” suspension lift (no blocks)
Rancho Shocks & steering stabilizer

16x9 Steel Rock Rims with 315/75R16 Goodyear MTR tires.




Since this current “build” isn’t about what has been done in the past, I’ll use that as a starting point. Today, she has the bed off as I’m in the process of swapping out the wood bed for a metal floor. I’ve also decided to try and learn how to do some primer and paint work.

Today I got the first coat of paint applied to the truck. Sheri and I managed to sand the thing down last night, and got done just before the rain came. I was up first thing this morning, excited, as this IS my first paint job….

After 3 cups of coffee, making sure that I was good and “twitchy” (think Tweak from South Park) I started. I went out and mixed up the paint…



I then got my equipment on, up and running, and proceeded to paint the bed of the truck.

Before I post the pictures, I need y’all to understand that this is not, nor will it ever be a “show truck.” My standard disclaimer is that I use this truck as a truck. Moving rock, going hunting or camping, or just general off-roading. I have no intention of removing every ding and scrape. I have personally earned all of those love marks on the truck, and intend to keep them.

The other warning is that this is my first paint job. My experience with painting is contained in the three coats of primer that were shot and sanded before shooting the color. That being said…….

The inside and top of the bed rails will be rhino-lined in the future, but I’m not decided if I’m going to have it done in the orange of if it’ll be in black. Thank goodness I don’t have to decide that today.

Well, I got the second coat done today, and (after a brief drying) moved it out into the hot Arizona sun for its final baking. I’m very happy with the results of my first painting endeavor.

I also ordered all new lenses for my lights, so those should be here and ready for me to put the bed back on the truck this coming weekend.

I’ll keep this updated.

The other thing that I did was starting to strip the rear bumper off. As I was sitting there looking at the bed of the truck, I realized that the poor, mostly white with rust and other spots bumper wouldn’t look that good.

In this vast “friend of a friend” network that we all have, I’m two steps removed from a powder coater. I’ve decided to go with black bumpers in lieu of the white. No pictures of the bumper today. (It’s not nearly as exciting as the paint.)

Well, I got a couple of things done today.

First off, I was able to get the bed mounted. My mom & step-dad had shown up on their way back up to Colorado, so I was able to get my step-dad’s help in getting the bed put back on.


After my folks left, I went ahead and put the new lenses in, rewired the electrical, and remounted the bottle opener.





This one makes me realize how much I need to do on the front after the Elk hunt in October.








And finally, I started stripping down the bumpers, getting them ready to go for powder coating this week.



This coming week, I’ve also got an appointment with the Line-X guys on Thursday. I think I’m going to go ahead and shoot the bed in black, as I can’t quite justify the $300 additional it would take to color match the vehicle. In addition to that, (and after listening to my wife and buddies Taz & Jeffica), I think I’m going to re-do the lower body line in black.

I think the lining over the top, the lower body line in black & the black powder coated bumpers will look sharp in contrast to the orange.

Anyway, that’s my updates for today.

Dude I have got to tell you that I love your truck. I am working on a 69 gmc 3/4 ton 4x4 and now am inspired to get back into the garage. Also congrats on the elk hunt what unit?

Thanks! I get up through Chino Valley every now and again, typically when I head up to Seligman for my javelina hunt. My brother, two buddies and I got drawn for cow elk in Unit 9. October 16 opening day, so it'll be an early one on the south rim of the canyon.

I had shot an initial coat of primer on one side of my tailgate a while back. Knowing that I really needed to get it done and back on the truck before shooting the bed liner, I decided to crank that out today.

Last night I was able to put the new coat of paint on the tailgate. I rushed a little bit, and ended up with two runs down the passenger side. Nothing a little more sanding won’t remedy.






So, now it’ll be a matter of getting it reinstalled on the back of the truck. Let’s hope that Friday yields a little bit of time to work on it, somewhere in between work, Friday night & long weekend…….

Well, I have been a little bit neglectful in getting this updated in a timely manner as of late.

I got the front and rear bumpers done. The powder coating turned out great, and I was very happy with the results. I decided to go with black instead of the original white or chrome. There’s something about having the items blacked out that mean business. I’ve seen far too many trucks that are all glitz and glam, and have yet to have the tires leave the road.

Anyway, onward to the pictures:

Thanks Richard. I have got to tell you that I love what you're doing with that C/30. I have toyed with the idea of turning mine into a dually..... haha, that and a duramax/allison combination. In between the dreams, I have the reality of just finishing this one up.

I know that you've put yours into limbo for a while, but I love seeing the "heavy" metal trucks.

Thank you Scott. That C30 should be back on the top of the list within a couple months. The plan is a diesel for it but it depends on what I come across at the salvage auction when the time comes. There always seems to be a couple early 90's Rams going through there as compared to GM stuff.

Ok, 3 years later, I've started working on the cab rust repair. It's been a while, and this has stayed on the back-burner for quite some time, but here goes:
