Question Big block motor number question....

Is this a desirable motor?

Head casting number 3931063
Head date code F-25-8 June 25,1968
Block Casting number 3935440
Block date code G-16-8 July 16,1968 (Hard to read but fairly certain I'm reading it right)

Info on deck pad..T0712IV

Engine assembled in Tonawanda, NY on July 12 396 325 HP 4bbl. It came out of a Impala

Inputs greatly appreciated.

Re: Big block motor number question....

Heads are 65-69 325/350/385 & 390 HP 396 with 96.4 cc chambers, 2.06/1.72 valves. Block is 68 396 with 9.8 deck height and 4.094 bore. I have this same basic engine in my Camaro and it runs great. It's desirable but not necessarily rare. Better than a truck block though for horsepower.

Thanks for the info. It's a running long block with only 500 miles on a rebuild. What's it worth?

Re: Big block motor number question....

Why is it better than a truck block? What is the difference?

Unless this is a 4 bolt main 396 block, essentially there is no difference between truck or pass. car. The 440 casting number was the first block to use dowel pins for the timing chain cover. Production ended in Aug of 1968.chevy:

Truck blocks have a 0.4 inch taller deck. Truck blocks, therefore, require a special wider truck intake manifold. Also, GM made a 366 truck block with a 3.935 inch bore. Truck heads are marked "TRUCK" and have very small intake ports, thus the "peanut port" moniker. Won't support top end horsepower.

Hey Hart....Since no one has answered your question yet, I'll start things off...

I'd say it's worth $800...

Okay.....I thought something was up. You are talking about a "tall deck" motor. The problem is that his motor is a 396. The tall decks were 366 and 427. They didn't make a 396 tall deck motor. Your phrase "truck motor" was what confused me. A lot of car motors will have casting letters that say "HI PERF TRUCK" inside the bell housing area.
