It makes for one big, heavy trailer.

I would just get an aluminum trailer - much easier to move around, and it will tilt.

Yeah, but you can't put 2 1/2 yards of dirt or 4200#s of scrap metal in one of those aluminum ones

Re: anyone ever built a tailior out of

I have built several trailers out of these trucks. They work great. One thing I do is I put a Caddy rear axle out of a mid 70's El Dorado and set the axle on top of the leafs which lowers the trailer about 5 inches. The axle tube is the same diameter as the trucks so I just weld on the spring mounts and use the truck u bolts. My personal trailer even has a hydraulic dump!

Where I come from (the rust belt!), we wouldn't dream of doing such a thing to a nice 67-72 bed

Re: anyone ever built a tailior out of

When I moved my wife out here the the 'real' midwest (she's from Ohio) she was shocked to see a trailer made out of a truck. Just a normal site that I grew up with, but she makes fun of it everytime she sees one.

I wish my truck looked like your trailer. Even your tailgate is much nicer.

Im thinking because Eldorado's are front wheel drive so when you use the rear axle you just get an axle with no internals to deal with...just a tube or beam, whatever its made from.

If you take the yoke off the pinion will slide into the housing and lock the whole thing up. You dont have to do anything special to the rear end. We have 4 truck bed trailers that we use for firewood. They work great and are easy to build.

someday I'm gonna get a suburban, and thought it would be cool to have a matching bed trailer to make home depot runs easier

That is correct. The el dorado is a straight axle. It is a disposable part on a caddy that usually gets crushed. Also, I don't like to waste a good eaton axle on a trailer. Sometimes on a dana 60, I will simply cut the axle shafts off and bolt the axle plate back on to keep the ring and pinion from turning. That gives you a full floating straight axle that will handle those 4200 pound scrap loads.

Re: anyone ever built a trailor out of

I have a 1950 short bed pick up box trailer to pull behind my 50 3100. I even have 1950 Idaho licence plates on both truck and trailer aswell. Some day I will make them look the same.

Re: anyone ever built a trailor out of

we always used them for firewood, cut wood in the pasture and then leave it in the trailer by the house, saves alot of uloading/loading, my buddy has two burn barrels in one, pulls it up to the house, then out back to burn when they are full.
