You Know You're Working on an Old Truck When...

When you drop your wrench as you're working on the interior and you have to get out of the cab to get it because it fell all the way through the truck to the garage floor.

Re: You Know You're Working on an Old Truck When...

you know you can make it run enough to get home with bailing wire, duc tape, and an old soda can

you have one key and it hangs from the ignition with a church key

you know what 3 on the tree is or a radio delte panal

your high beam switch is on the floor

when the hole in the dash isn't big enough for a cd player

when you can sit on the fender with your tool box on the air cleaner and your feet on the frame rails when you change your plugs.....you 60's guys know what I'm talking about

when you lean back on the gas tank while sitting on a milk crate just to go for a ride to the parts store......

Yeah, and you can (carefully) climb over the grill, plant a foot on each inner fender and park your butt on the radiator to fiddle with the carb or distributor! (My wife's Honda mechanic LOVED that one)

You can acually change the spark plugs without dropping the engine.

When all your metric wrenches and sockets are at the back of the toolbox and they're still nice and clean and shiny.

The body panels are held on with all 3/8 hardware.
Work doesn't start till you have a 9/16 socket in your hand.

Every part on it is not stamped or marked MADE IN...
Your tool box is your back pocket.
The only people in the neigborhood that knows what year it is is the old guy on the porch.
The only hazard lights are your arms waving with a flashlight.
You can pull your engine and repaint in the morning and go to the beach that afternoon.
The adds on television for your truck were in black and white.
Gas was 25 cents when your truck was made. (And my uncle was furious about that)

Most everything else is pretty solid. I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the supports. A check of the underside showed only a couple of small holes in the rear supports, but the floor in that area is good. I'll get under it to do those after I finish the floor. The difficult bends of the rockers and such are good, needing only patchwork in the easy areas. Thanks for asking.

Here's the before:

I did a write-up here on the "as found" and towing trip for anyone who's interested.

When you go to the parts store and they have to dig out the book because your year truck isn't in the computer......and then you have to look it up in the book yourself because they don't know what they're looking for.

I have been there soooo many times!

You know, when ever everyone is standing around you telling (I remember when I had) stories.

When anytime you need to remove a bolt or nut from the bottom of the truck, you need to wear safety glasses just to keep the rust out of your eyes!!
