Unhappy damn

ok well my truck kept dying yesterday and i checked the voltage...its my alternator cuz its like 12.1 off and 12 while running...i don't really have the money to buy a brand new alternator...so ima probably just go to a junkyard and get one and the junkyard by my house sells them for 20 bucks....but i need a make and model ...so what is the biggest and newest alternator that will fit my truck and what is the year and make it comes off of my truck is a 82 k10 but the engine is a 74 400 small block

i thought any gm small block alternator would work, but like n2trux said, bring your old one to compare

Re: damn

well all things recently considered.. you put a big ass stereo into an OLD truck without any preventative work..
so what you NEED dude is a new alternator with a higher output.. or a capacitor...

the heavy draw from you stereo was not even a thought when your truck was made.. so your alternator was not origionally equipped to handle the excessive draw of today's aftermarket stereos.

so get a bigger better alt.. that's yoru only option..
ask for monies..
or hell do some day labor.. something.. =-)
if you want anytign bad enough you'll find a way to get it..

Re: damn

I used an alt for an 86 Firebird with A/C. Its 94 amps. Might have to swap on you V-belt pulley. Used an impact wrench if you got one or they can swap it for you.

Re: damn

you can ask the guys at the counter.. for an "upgraded alt" pretty much (this is really generic here) but any UPGRADED output alt will work one designed for sbc chevy wihtout a serpentine system..

Get a 84-86 Camaro 100 AMP alternator. It has the v-belt pulley on it. I used one for years.

get the one from Advance... but dont expect your battery/alt to last long if you use your audio and off-road lights a lot. could also cause your amp to overheat...

you need at least a 90 amp alt if you are going to use anything that draws current, i/e amps aftermarket lights...

the capacitor mentioned is good advice for the amp

if this isn't your daily... save the pennies and get a higher amp alt.

Re: damn

One thing that I've seen done is people will use the heavy duty alts from a 1 ton street truck up to dump truck. It may bolt right on, or it may need some bracket mods to fit. I'll have to ask my buddy next time I see him on how he did his.
