Tank 2 problems
Just a simple question about my 87 Sierra 1500 i just got home...i filled up the 2nd tank (which has not been used in at least 5 years) for the trip home but could never get the truck to start with the selector on that tank. Any suggestions would went wrong...is there a 2nd fuel pump? Any help is appreciated.

Fuel injected would have pumps in both tanks. It could also be cloged in the switching valve for that tank...

first thing you want to do is make sure the switch in the dash to switch tanks has power to both locations after that check to see if there is poweer to the right pump... if there is power there then the pump is fubar R&R that... the switchover valve also needs to be checked for power.. autozone has them

I have the same problem on my 87' V10 and am planning on repairing it this weekend. I posted a previous question about this on how to troubleshoot, and the answer I got helped me out a bunch. When you turn your ignition key on, you should hear the fuel pump "hum" on the side that you have your selector switch switched to (LH or RH). My left works, my right doesn't. When I switch my selector switch to right and turn on my key, no hum. When on the left, it hums. I.e right fuel pump is out. I know the selector valve on the frame is working, because when I turn the key, I hear it click. I bought a new AC Delco valve just to check, and when I hooked it up, it clicked and performed just the same, so I'm planning on taking it back because it was $140, but I figure I'll wait just to be sure until I have the pump replaced. While I have the tank out to replace the pump, I'm also replacing the sending unit just in case. I hope this helps you fix your problem. If my advice is not correct, someone please correct me. Is the switch pluged??
There is a plug on the firewall, see if its conected.... Can you hear the selector valve when you press the switch?? |

Unbolt, lift and, slide the bed back about 1ft onto some 4x4 timbers. 2 guys can do it. You can see the sender in the gap between the cab and bed you just can't reach it without moving the bed. Much easier than pulling a full tank.
