Headlights

I recently wired up two 30amp relays for my Hi/Low beams.

Before the relays I was running sylvania xtravision in the low-beams. They functioned perfect. I recently went to switch back to my sylvania Silverstars. ( they are noticably brighter) When I run the silver stars I have to re-wire the pin connector to get the lo-beams to work, then When I switch over to high beams I lose a low-beam ? VisaVersa When I wire it to the way the xtravisions where I get a little glow in high beams when Just the lows are on.

I must have a bad ground somewhere....

I want to just re-wire the whole headlight circuit from the firewall out. Using the old Low/Hi wires for the relays switched power.

My plan is to run two inline 30amp fuses to two 30amp relays. One for hi, one for low like Im currently running. Do I Need to run two relays for Each light ? Totaling 4 ? 2 high 2 low ?

Im going to run all 12awg wire and solder and shrinkwrap all my connections too. I just recently wired up a electric fan using all 12awg and solder connections. Turned out very nice.

Thanks for any help guys, I want to get my headlights dialed soon. The relays made a big difference already. Now I just want the wiring to the lights to be overkill

Re: Headlights

Two relays is all you need. If you can find them they make realys with dual 87 terminals http://www.suvlights.com/product_inf...roducts_id=119 that way you can feed each light from it's own terminal. I like to wire my relays with the 85 terminal as the ground because some have diode across the 85 and 86 terminals.

Re: Headlights

Thats good info. I wasnt aware of a dual 87 terminal relays like that.

Im wondering If I should go 85 ground, That could possibly be where im getting power bleeding through ? Would you then run 86 for the switched source ?

Im also having a hard time finding 12awg lead relay plugs, I can find 14awg leads all day.

Im going to mess with it some more tonight and post back....

Re: Headlights

Swaping the 85 and 86 terminals wont cause the issue you described, I do it because (I'm anal about it) and if you plug in a relay that has a diode across 85 and 86 you'll short straight to ground and fry the relay. I use the relays with diode's because when the field suddenly collapses on the relay you get a voltage spike that can damage sensitive equipment.

Re: Headlights

The way I do it is:

85 - ground
86 - switched source from the headlight switch
87 - out to headlights
30 - 12v in

Re: Headlights

Thanks for posting the drawing and info Travo77 and Glock35ipsc I need to do just that on my 71 as I have lights with H-4 bulbs that tend to be hard on dimmer switches.

That may be on today's list of projects.

Re: Headlights

Ok so I had to drive my truck tonight for about 30 miles in Pitch darkness....Me my truck and my lights....

And I have came to a conclusion, Ole' Blue Needs a H4 Euro code conversion.

I remember Hella making some Non DOT approved lenses that where Euro code ?

I want to go E code Hella lenses with a H4 bulb on the top lights. The high beams would still have to remain sealed beams ?? Or could I convert them over too ?

I realize this could get expensive and lead to HIDS

But I love some good lights, It must be a Surefire thing. ( If you own one you know what I mean )

Nothing beats pure focused light with no shadows... Every time a Benz or BMW passes me on the freeway at night I get jealous

Anyone have any good suggestions for a H4 conversion, and Not the ones in LMC. I don't really care for the look of the Len's.

Thanks

Re: Headlights

Any input ?

So far from the searching I have done, Hella 165mm lenses are what I will need, along with a set of H4 PIAA drivers and a set of H7 PIAA drivers.

H4's for the high/low and he H7 for high beams.

All wired up with 12awg wire and 30amp relays..

If I get this started I will keep posted
