Stock suspension

Anything wrong with that ? Looking at a GMC panel (late 40's -early 50's)
Want to keep it cheap. S-10 swap, Mustang II swap etc. don't interest me.
Is it just safer brakes and ride quality or the ability to go LOW ?
Why change ?

TIA

Re: Stock suspension

Better handling and ride, but like you that didn't interest me. I went with a dropped axle because I like the look along with monoleafs and added disc brakes. I am probably as low as MII's with the bottom of my front framehorns being 8.5" off the ground.

Re: Stock suspension

Too old, I'm looking at this for me in the future. Closer to the ground means less like to break hip if I fall out the truck.

Here you go. As for being old/low, my wife complains enough about getting into my 4wd Suburban, so this one will be easier for to slide into although my dog did call shotgun and she has real short little legs

I like the more traditional approach.

Re: Stock suspension

Robin - do you have a shot of the steering box from the other side? It looks like you have a vertical bracket welded to the top frame rail?? Thanks Patrick

CenPenn makes dropped axles or you can get them dropped (use a REPUTABLE person to do so, e.g. roadsters.com). Monoleafs are available from most aftermarket suppliers.

Patrick, yes I have the mounting for the ps box sitting higher than it would if using one of the many conversion kits sold but the bottom 2 boltholes are still in the frame. I positioned it so in order to minimize bumpsteer. I basically mounted the box to some 1/4" plate, clamped it to the frame and kept on moving it around until the arc the drap link moved through followed the same arc as the monoleafs. Cut it down to size, welded it to the top of the frame in the same fashion as a standard kit and welded a 90* support to the backside of the portion sticking up. I'll try to get a picture of it up.
