Is anyone running a Muncie 4-speed in our trucks? How is it set up? Where does the shifter come through the trasnmission hump? (Forward, rear, middle?) What type of shifter do you use? I have a lead on a Muncie for $450...

We are kicking around ideas for a build and want to know what type of non-granny 4-speeds we can use behind a built 350 (around 400hp). I think the NV4500 5-speed could work, but would like to have something a little more close ratio.

Hurst makes a shifter and install kit just for putting muncies in trucks.

I have a super T-10, but the muncie should be identical - Here's pics of mine:

I had one in my first '67 stepper but I used the stock column shifter and used a choke cable under the dash for reverse...

Here's mine. Sorry the pix is so dark but it was in the shade on a bright day. It's hard to see but mine comes out of the center of the hump far more forward that JIM_PA's does and yes, mine is factory original.

Here are some pictures of my 67 Pickup.

454, Muncie 4 Spd, High Hump Tunnel, Original Buddy Seats.

The picture with the stick closest to the seats is with the transmission in 4th gear.

Not much....just a simple ole '69 ruck crushen M-22!!! Will not fit through the original hole. I got another high hump and custom cut mine to fit nice and tight. She's sweet!

The shifter comes out the same place a 3spd floor shift conversion does.It`s 100% bolt-in swap for a 3spd.

I have a really rookie question. I have a 3 spd converted to a hurst floor shift. If I go to a muncie 4 spd, since the shifter comes up in exactly the same spot, can I just reuse the actual chrome stick I have since it works with my bench seat?

I think you'd have to cut it off, and drill 2 holes in it as the 4 speed shifters are completely different than a 3 speed.

Will a 4spd work with a small hump floor? Or does it need to be converted to a high hump?

I have a small hump. Are you talking about a car or truck 4-speed. I think it matters.

Hey Jim....what's your shifter arm out of? I think mine was a car (Impala) with a bench seat and I had to do a little fabbin' to get it high enough to clear the seat.

Special K: So you're telling me that a 3 speed is that close to the driver's side? I didn't know that. Mine was a 4 speed and the hole was dead-center. Not even close. Seems like the rake and what not of your shifter arm might affect clearance. Then again....those factory holes are usually pretty big!

You should be able to use the shifter "stick" on a 4 spd shifter, they are only held on by two bolts. The 4 spd shifters are the same way. Heck if you wanted to, you could use your 3spd shifter. But just like Locdoc, you'll have to have a choke cable or something to put it in reverse.

I put a Muncie in one and a Saginaw (car 4spds) in another truck and both were former 3spds converted to floor shift.As I recall we didn`t do any additional cutting in the floor (low hump).Linkage is on the side of both transmissions.
The Hurst (Indy) 3spd shift levers bolt up different than the Hurst 4spds.I forget the series,Competition?I don`t see why they couldn`t be made to work.I have a tall Hurst 3spd lever I had in a truck that I hope to use.There is a just for our trucks application now.I know the 55-57 car bench seat levers work and I know of another that doesn`t have such a hook to it works.I just don`t know what it came out of.

Camaro, Chevelle, Corvette, Nova, 67-81? I'm sure there's more years than that.

Just make sure it's a muncie, or SUPER T-10. Watch out for Saginaw 4 speeds, you probably don't want one of them.

I had just written a long drawn out explanation of this and just as I was about to hit submit......my electricity flashed off for a few seconds.

So, long story-shortened

These car transmissions really do not have enough span between low and hi gear.
The close ratio box is only 2.2-1 and the wide ratio is only 2.5-1. Where your typical truck transmission, not even counting that super-low first gear, has about 3.5-1.

If you gear the rear differential high enough to run at hi-speed on the highway, it will be a slug in the city....and forget about hauling or towing.

If you gear it low enough to be "fun" to drive in town, it will run out of breath on the interstate.

You can't have both

Right - this is definitely more for high performance/cruisers, rather than heavy towing.

I do fine with the 295/50/15's and 3.73's, and I can still haul more weight than I would ever attempt to haul with it, but I wouldn't do it all the time. A car transmission just isn't made for it.

When I need tires again, I'll probably go to a 275/60 but that won't change things much.

Yes, but that is not what the original poster was refering to....and although I was "corrected" like this one other time, that is not the generally accepted "name" of the big truck transmission.
Most of them are called by number SM420, SM465, etc.
Besides, you wouldn't have to ask or "adapt" to use a factory availble transmission.

Tremec TKO all the way - 3.27 1st gear, .68 OD 5th, shifts like butter, and tough as nails! with that 400hp and a set of 3.73's, you'll never stop smiling!
