Re: Cam cost?
Ok Third, I'll HAVE YOU KNOW I HAD TO CRAWL INTO MY ATTIC HALF DRUNK SO I BETTER GET A THANKS FOR THIS LOL! My labor time guide for a 1985 says that a cam replacement is 9.6hr with a/c and power steering now go 9.6 hr times what ever the shops rate is per hour most likely around $100 bucks your looking around close to a $1000 and that doesn't include the the cost of the cam and lifters and gaskets and everything else. Here's the deal I worked at Chevy dealer for a long while before I had to leave because I could no longer make money there due to the crap that goes on in the front office, go to your local dealer or one of the other shops and ask around if you don't know anyone,JUST WALK INTO THE SHOP! there and see who the best mechanic is to put a cam in, he will most likely look up the labor time to do the job and do it for $30 an hour that's only $300 tell him you will pay him half now and half when done, talk to him get to know him and use him in the future IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH HIS WORK remember he is only getting payed maybe $18-$21 an hr so $30 tax free cash now is good for him, he will most likely go in on Saturday and get it done. Hope this helps

Re: Cam cost?
I can do it, but I'm moving to an apartment, not allowed to work on ANYTHING. So I HAVE TO bring it to a shop . Thanks guys, I'll call a few local reputable shops. What all do I have to buy for a cam swap? I just want a small lope, so nothing huge, a cheap summit cam.

Re: Cam cost?
Do you have a buddy who will you use their garage? This can be done in a day pretty easily.
You'll need cam, lifters, break in lube, and timing set. Gaskets will be intake, timing cover, fuel pump, and rocker covers. May need to get a gallon of anti freeze too. You will need to remove the center support in the rad support to be able to get the cam all the way out. Do you have a cam yet? Comp Cams High Energy 268H will give you a very nice power increase, and have a mildly choppy idle. I had one in my 68. Bone stock crate engine, Performance Products intake, Edelbrock 1406, ram horn manifolds and Summit brand welded mufflers. Nice idle.

Re: Cam cost?
ok so looking at glock's cam, carb, intake and exhaust set up, using comp cams cam quest software i found that glock's making 281hp at 4500 rpm and about 361tq at 3000 rpm. that's assuming he's using the "high flow dual plane intake"(edelbrock 2101 equivalent) and running roughly 8.5:1 compression ratio(155psi +/- 5 psi or so). now if it was the performer rpm equivalent(7101) then he's making roughly 307hp at 5000rpm and 371tq at 3500 rpm. so i would go to the comp cams website, download the cam quest software(100% free btw) and play around with the different cams. i got it cause i was wanting to do a comp cams extreme energy 268h cam and was curious as to what kinda power i was gonna make with my 305 and i'll be making about 330hp. the software has a dyno sim already partitioned into it so when ever you put in your specs and select a cam it will give you a rough figure of hp. but if glock had went with the xe268h cam then he would be making 320hp

Re: Cam cost?
so i would find out what your compression ratio is, intake and exhaust valve size and go from there. and if you go with a comp cams cam then i would get the whole kit, that has the springs, retainers, locks, seals, cam and lifters, timing set and i believe pushrods

Re: Cam cost?
I was wondering because I am thinking about getting a C10 with a 350, and throwing in a cam. Something like this:

Re: Cam cost?
yeah i would definitely download the camquest software. its free and gives you plenty of choices. and i would also get a comp cams full kit. they don't cost more than $400 and they give you everything that you need to install and run the cam, except for the gaskets.
