HEI... go do it right now... careful though...

I just spent the day installing my HEI, I stole it off of my 78 Malibu wagon.....running the wire was the hardest part. Also I leaned against my heater hose and busted the dang heater core! So be careful about that........
Then when I got done it just cranked and cranked, so I thought I screwed up.... sat there thinking and realized I never plugged in the cap! Plugged it in and Whammo it started instantly! Ran it around in the desert, went out on the highway, turned it off and on a dozen times. It starts much better, and the all the hesitation is gone. Can't wait to see how the mileage improves. So Go Do It NOW!!!! you won't be sorry....!

absolutly. even for the guys like me who like the original type trucks. its one upgrade that everyone should do. points are a pain in the ass...

I totally agree! Mine has been on for 3 years, and I would never consider having points on any motor again.

have a qualified HEO didtributor rebuild shop set the centrifugal advance curves for the engine it is installed in... There is a wide difference among advance curves.. and also check the vacumm advance to be sure total advance is within specs...
....And.... set the spark plug gap at .045
( I have the advance curve info as contained in GM/AC Delco Tune Specs., manual SD-100...This manual gives tune-up specs 1971-1980. I specifically like the specs that state the total advance (centrifugal & vacuum) @ 2000 RPM....If you have the proper timing lite; makes it super easy to set timing ............Jim

Indeed. I went HEI and will -never- go back. The improvement over a points setup is just sick.

Definitely one of the best things you can do. Once I got the dead module sorted out my HEI kicks the *stuff* outta points.

And I've broke that bottom hose off the heater core 3x. ARRRRRRGH

I agree with everyone else, HEI kicks a$$. Been in my truck for 2 years and 20,000 miles with zero problems.

Did anyone else notice that a points-equipped SBC sounds about twice as loud through the exhaust at idle as a HEI equpped SBC? Why is this?

I like my HEI also; does anyone have trouble with their HEI cap rubbing against the firewall? 71 Blazer 350/th350.
