Old power steering gear box
Okay first I'm puttin a motor in my truck that has power steering and the gearbox from my doner vehicle will not work on my truck. I have an old power steering gearbox that fits this truck but it's been sitting in the bed for a while now. What all would I have to do to clean/rebuild the thing and how much pressure van they take, I would hate to blow it up after I fix it.

Re: Old power steering gear box
we need more information..
what year is your truck what year is the donor gearbox 2wd or 4wd pics of your "old pump" that you describe. You can rebuild them but it has a lot of pieces in it... you also have to make sure that your lines will work on the old pump...

Re: Old power steering gear box
I agree with the rebuilding. It can be done and there's sites that show you how in the net. But, unless you have the proper tools and knowledge it may be worse afterwards.
If that old gear box fits, about the only thing you can do is to try it. Maybe drain as much of the fluid as you can out of it and refill as much as you can with fresh fluid. It would take a tremendous amount of pressure to damage them unless the seals are totally dried out. Some years ago, I pulled one out of a junked truck that had been disconnected and not working for about 10 years. It worked fine on my truck. |
