Dual Leaf Springs

On my 67 GMC Fleetside LB (6 bolt lugs), I have dual leaf springs. 9 on the bottom, a small block, and 4 on top. Was this an option, or did they all come this way? I can't seem to find any real info on this, yet.

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

It sounds like someone installed a set of overloads on it. Are they blue by chance?
Helwig has been selling helper springs for a long time although there are probably similar springs around made by others.

They are/were popular with guys with campers.

If you don't intend to carry heavy loads you can take them off if you desire.

Here is a pic. They look like they belong there. So far I don't plan on taking them off.

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

Yep, overloads, you might have the heavy duty suspension. They let the truck carry more weight than the stock springs will handle. They help stabilize it when you have a load on or are towing a trailer with quite a bit of tongue weight too.

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

That's is some stout springs! What can a regular long bed haul that would require such heavy duty springs? I would think sprngs that heavy would be on a 1 ton or bigger. My swb GMC came with 8 leafs and I removed 3 of them.

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

that is a factory style G80 (if memory serves) spring pack.
It looks exactly like the optional overloads on my one ton longhorn.
Is it listed on the SPID? if not, I say someone added them.

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

Sorry, I forgot about this thread. The SPID is long gone. I really doubt any part of the truck belongs with the cab (and VIN). It is possible the frame and running gear are from another model. Someone told me it could be the towing package. It does have a hitch where the bumper should be. (again, I don't know if it was added. Dang PO.) It has 6 bolt lugs front and back. I'm going to leave the extra springs. Who knows, I might need to tow/haul something my daily driver can't handle. Like, maybe a large building or mountain.

It's like a puzzle, and I'm no cryptologist!

Re: Dual Leaf Springs

Ok, so that part of the puzzle fits. 1/2 ton with huge springs! I'm cool with that.
