went to the demo durby tonight with the family it was a blast a couple roll overs good hits and one that ended up on top of another car
the best was the truck class (urban assault) it was a good turn out there was about 15 trucks total 10 of them where square bodys 3 suburbans 6 long beds and 1 73-80 short bed YES A SHORT BED i seen it come out and jaw hit the floor it was 2wd the body was not bad on it and the bed was straight with just little rust the first time it got hit it broke my hart some lol
one of the suburbans won well at least it was a chevy that came out on top

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.... there are LOTS of these trucks. I saw more turned in on Cash For Clunkers in one dealership than destroyed in that demolition derby.

At least the fewer there are around, the more valuable it makes ours.

And if you want a frightening thought, I have destroyed LOTS of really nice GM cars (mostly 80's Cadillacs) in demo derby's through the last several years. My favorite cars to use are the ones that are in great shape but have something minor wrong with them that I can fix easy and buy from the old man/woman for $300-$400.

My biggest problem with demo derbies is the people. It is sad to see a nice vehicle put in a derby, but it happens. If the people could take the time to disassemble the cars and save good parts, and maybe sell them, that would be great. Trim and interior pieces are pretty valuable and these parts generally need to be removed anyway. I ran a demo truck this year, but the truck I used was a parts truck. Once I took all the good parts off, it was going to the crusher anyway. It was a parts truck first! My dad is in need of trim and interior pieces for his El Camino and a lot of Monte and Malibu parts would work but most of the good stuff gets wrecked.

I've actually tried that several times, and every time nobody was interested in spare parts I "saved". Even though I would practically give those parts away for almost nothing.

Now when I get my derby car for the year, I just rip it apart and forget about trying to sell anything, unless I need something or I know someone that does. At most I usually sell off the carb, dist, and some of the air conditioning parts. But trim, interior etc, all that goes in one big pile and I haul it to the scrapyard with the car when I'm done with it.

Right, But you are not using a '70 to '77 Monte or early chevelle. You are not using a car that many people are interested in restoring.

The dirt track by me switches every other Friday between compact demos and full size demos.
I've seen alot of nice older cars get trashed out there.It doesn't bother me at all though.It's not my car so I don't care.

They do, in the 4 and 6 cyl classes and plenty of them.

If the other cars we use in demo derby's were worth a crap to begin with, we might not be so inclined to destroy them.

It reminds me of that monster garage episode where Jesse James used a true 1971 or 1972 Elcamino SS 402 (it had an SS gauge cluster and a big block) to build a derby car to race in a figure 8 race. And of course, it gets T-boned. I think its disgusting. Find a new hobby......like restoring them....

Just so ya know...I do restore them. I'm currently restoring a '68 Coronet R/T 440 4 speed car and helping my dad restore his '72 440, Factory Air Grabber Road Runner, not to mention the other cars I/We have done and sitting in his shop. And when I'm done with this R/T, I'm moving onto my truck.

I've yet to meet someone interested in restoring a late 70's-80's Cadillac for any 4 door GM period, unless they were making a hoopty or "donk" or whatever they call those pos. They ruin them anyway when they cut the wheel wells to make room for the huge ass rims.

As for the El Camino, the guy sold it to him. People can do whatever they want with their cars.....like the 2 Deloreons they destroyed on that show...or the mint Caddy they used for a derby car. Guess what, I still see TONS of all those cars.

Some of us like it. some of us don't. The fact is we can't tell other people what the can or can not do with the vehicles they own and I think we should all be happy about that.
I know a guy that has cut up a blazer and a step side short box k10, literally, after he decided neither of them was good enough to make into off road trucks. I saved the box and many other parts like a 4 spd. tilt collum. Now if that isn't dishearting, I'm not sure what is.

How would you like it if you saw some one with a mint Coronet or Road Runner at the derby. I also hate the "donk" style cars. Im mad with those who destroy cars that are rare and worth restoring. One day soon enough, these cars and even square body trucks are going to be rare. I know that everyone can do whatever it is they want to do with their vehicles. I just want them to take comfort in the fact that they are part of the reason that they are becoming rare.

I get what your saying, but you won't find a mint musclecar in a derby, you wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning. Now, I'm sure back in the day plenty of them were used as stock cars... but at the time they just weren't worth anything. Now that they're the in thing, nobody would put a Hemi Road Runner on a race track to beat the hell out of, maybe a dragstrip.......maybe

I like the big '70-'77 Imperials and New Yorkers, plenty of those went into derby's and they didn't make many of them compared to GM's, but they're still around even after the fact.

You should feel lucky as a GM guy that they made 100's of thousands of the cars/trucks you like and they're still affordable and cheap to get parts for. Try being a Mopar guy for a day.....

I still can't help but think why the hell they didn't use a car in worse shape, from what I remember it was a really nice car. And I totally agree it would have been "better" to have used a more abundant model.
