3 on the tree to th200r4

How tough of a swap will this be?

I believe the 3 speed only has mounts to the bellhousing, no crossmember correct?

If this is the case, what cross member do I need to find?

Can I use a lokar style shifter that bolts to the tranny, and keep my bench seat?

Thanks!

I believe Board member ebfabman just did this swap. Maybe PM him if he doesn't see this thread.

Re: 3 on the tree to th200r4

Ok here is my list

Lokar TV cable for the 200r4
a factory auto column // either tilt or not
an aftermarket transmission crossmember
transmission and torque converter and bolts
flywheel and bolts
transmission cooler lines
make sure your radiator has a place to put the cooler lines
an external transmission cooler is always recommended
you will need to have the driveshaft cut, and a different front yoke installed
a four pin brake light switch for the lockup feature of the torque converter
wiring to the above switch.
You could use a Lokar floor shifter, and I think they are of good quality

You will need to remove the crossmember that currently hold the transmission mounts. It is riveted in. It will not be reused. Once you get the old stuff out of the way, a new column ( if you go that way ) shift linkage to the column ( lokar makes that also ) install the trans, have the driveshaft built, wire the lockup to the converter and you are done

Re: 3 on the tree to th200r4

My 72 used the stock drive shaft and yoke. I used a stock auto crossmember. For now I have the lockup toggled switched. I used a junkyard tv cable along with the carb linkage off a mid 80's GM. Try to use a 3 or 4 row auto raditor with the cooler rather than just an external one. Easy and straight forward. You will love it.

One more thing, I didn't have to drill any holes, everything lined up to holes already in the frame. I use a stock truck auto tilt and stock shift linkage with only slight mods. so easy a caveman could do it

Cool thanks for the info.

What are your thoughts on towing with these trannys?

Re: 3 on the tree to th200r4

The 200-4R is only one inch longer overall than the Saginaw 3-spd, and from what ebfabman says that must be "close enough".

The stock trans crossmembers you can use are, for sure, any 67-72 auto trans except for TH400's; and probably any 73-87(89) crossmembers with the same exception. Many 4-spd crossmembers also have the right bolt spacing for the mount as well.

This goes for 200-4Rs from any G-body or S-10 with a 3.8L or bigger engine, I think there were some Camaro/Firebird 200-4Rs that I would not try to make fit.

Leave it in drive, not overdrive and you have the same thing as any old 3-speed auto towing in 3rd. The 1 to 1 drive in the 200-4r is pretty much a straight shot through the tranny just like the old time religion non-overdrives.

Re: 3 on the tree to th200r4

Just use the 153 tooth count flexplate and a block mounted starter that uses one long bolt and one short bolt.
