Code 32 on '87 TBI
Okay, I tend to think I am pretty handy, but I'm a little stumped. I recently fixed a code 22 (TPS low voltage) by replacing the plug, which was cracked and brittle, and the actual TPS. It quit throwing any codes for about 2 1/2 weeks and then all of a sudden last night I got a check engine light. Checked it, and it is a code 32 (EGR). Okay, so a little investigation and I first realize that the vacuum source on the front of the TBI for the EGR is plugged. But after a few looks around the ole' intake manifold, there is no EGR valve. There's a location for one on the passenger side just right/rear of the TBI, but it has a block off plate in it's place. What should I do know?

Have an aftermarket performance shop re-flash your ecm to not monitor EGR. Or if all else fails, replace the block off with an EGR valve.

Re: Code 32 on '87 TBI
The ECM does not moniter the EGR valve. The ECM controls the EGR vacuum soleniod. all the ECM looks for is voltage feedback from the solenoid. so as long as the wires to the solenoid are good ( Ignitoin hot wire and the wire to the ECM ) and the coil isnt bad in the solenoid. No EGR code. Regardless of vacuum or the EGR valve not being there TBI computers moniter few curcuits.

Re: Code 32 on '87 TBI
Okay, so where is the EGR solenoid and what color are the wires that go to it. It's suppose to be on that bracket on the right side of the TBI, correct? It ain't there, so where else could it be, & if it isn't there, I will have to hunt down the wires in the harness and replace the plug and put a new solenoid on...right?
Thanks Clinebarger! |

OK, I apologise, have them re-flash to not monitor the EGR "circuit". I guess I should have been more specific.

Re: Code 32 on '87 TBI
The wire colors should be gray & pink (pink-Ignition hot, gray To ECM pin A4)
heres some drawing i have. 1972supercheyenne TBI ECMs are not "flashed"they use a removable PROM (Programable read only memory) that whould have to be "burned". later model ECMs use a flash memory EEPROM (Electronic Erasable Read Only Memory) |

Re: Code 32 on '87 TBI
Thanks again, Clinebarger for the drawings. That should help me solve my latest issue. I'm not going to do any kind of reprogramming as I plan to put a 5.3 out of an '05 this winter, but I want the motor running right so I can possibly use it in another project later on.
Cheers, Ed |
