campers and airbags?

here is my plan. i live in sacramento ca and i want to drive my truck to a carshow in austin texas (lonestar round-up) so i'm looking for a camper that will fit the style of my truck. the one problem i foresee is that me truck is lowered a bit. and i don't really want it to beet me up the whole way. so do you think that helper bags would do the trick?
here is my truck.

and if i can get the money together this is the camper i would like to buy. what do you guys think?

Re: campers and airbags?

Have you made that drive before? It takes forever! I was stationed at Ft. Hood (twice), which isn't very far from Austin, and made the drive from there to Ukiah (my home town) 2 1/2 times.....it's a real butt-kicker! The first 2 times were round trips and I did those in my El Camino (comfy!) and the last 1/2 trip was when I left and never went back. I did that one in a '71 C10 I owned at the time (not near as comfy!).

Re: campers and airbags?

i've never made the trip but to me the journey is oftentimes better than the show. i plan to take a couple of days each way. so i'm not super worried about the drive.

Oh, no doubt about the journey...just giving you a heads-up. There's some beautiful country between Sac and Texas....and I was crunched for time when I made those trips.

Texas is worth the trip. I'd walk it if it meant going to the Roundup.

How is the truck currently lowered in the rear? Once we know this, we can help you make an informed decision.

I agree on the 'road-trip' experience too. Sometimes the trip is the better part of the show. If you swing through the Dallas area, we can convoy out as me & a buddy were discussing doing this show this year but scheduling conflicts prevented going. Next year, it's on our calendar for sure.

Re: campers and airbags?

I would go with whatever kit you need to add the bags. I ran a lowered S10 with helper bags and used it to haul flagstone to my house. I pumped up the bags and it would sit level w/ a load in the back. I just had shrader valves in the bed to fill the bags.

Yep, I'm going next year too. My list for next year is the HAMB drags and Lonestar Roundup.

Skip the TJ springs & go directly to rear bags. Lower ride that's adjustable for the weight difference you'll experience w/the addition of a camper (or any significant load). Ride is as good as stock height.

We're talking the 2010 Round-Up right? I seem to recall it's in the spring?

I agree with SCOTI, if you just buy a couple bags, fittings, and line. you will have a great rear suspension.
you will need to modify the frame to mount the bag and for the air fitting go through it.

steer clear of the air shocks, they are extremely light duty.

Re: campers and airbags?

I like it! I'm trying to find a good late 50's- early '60's shell AND smaller camp trailer of the same vintage to tow behind my 'bagged '62 and '63 trucks. Oh, the trailer will be getting 'bagged too!!

Re: campers and airbags?

I thought you meant a pull behind camper too...
You should be fine with just airshocks.

Heres my old 60 swb with my scotty. The 60 had TJ springs and no airshocks etc...And it pulled the scotty loaded with my wifes crap, no problem...
