Resetting Odometer

So...
I've pulled the motor out of my 72 c-10, and am COMPLETELY rebuilding / hot rodding it.
With that being said, I think it's time to set the odometer back to zero to better represent how many miles the rebuilt engine now has on it...
So...
How do I do that?

Re: Resetting Odometer

Not to sure, but isn't it by attaching the speedo cable to a drill and setting the drill in reverse??
This may be wrong so wait for others to chime in.

This can be done but it takes forever!!! You cant go too fast or you'll tear up the odometer so lets say you do it at 100 mph, with 60k on the odometer it will take you 600 hours. Haven't done it myself but I knew a shady guy that said it wasn't worth his time.

Re: Resetting Odometer

I've done it before. If you take the barrel out you will see that there is a plastic retainer and if you remove that you can roll all the numbers to 0 and replace the retainer. Just don't break the retainer. If you dig into it you should see what I'm talking about. Its really not difficult.

Re: Resetting Odometer

Yup I have taken the whole thing appart and just removed them from the shaft an set them to zero real quick. Again be verry careful as you can break parts when totally taking it appart that far. Maybe have a spair one to do it on first.

FYI be careful if you go to clean the numbers as if I remember correct you can wipe off the white paint. But then I could be wrong an that only being on the guages. Been to long since I did this.

Re: Resetting Odometer

If you break the retainer get a index card and cut a new one it will last for a very long time as long as it's in the truck.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Why not celebrate that hi-po motor and buy a new speedo?! They come with like 1/10 of a mile on them... and the new ones read to 100,000 miles...

Re: Resetting Odometer

It really wasnt that hard at all after reading the step by step, the hardest part was removing the needle without breaking it(good thing I had an old spare).

Here's how mine turned out!

Re: Resetting Odometer

If anyone is trying to reset theirs, I found this post from 2006 I believe and it really helps get the tumblers where you want them.

If you have the odometer wheel out just hold it in your left hand with fingers holding the first metal tab(left to right) and turn the gear with other hand until you have 9 in the ten thousand place. Then just keep holding the first metal tab and now hold the second metal and turn until you have 99***. Then you do the same for the rest until 99999. Then I just reinstall the wheel and then turn the speedo by hand a few turns until 00000. Hope that helps.

That's how you can tell if one has been reset. If you notice the numbers don't line up in the window 100% correct. I think they all turn out that way if they have been reset manually... Not sure why.

Leon, to get mine set in the window correctly I set all the tumblers to 999999. Then I hooked my drill up to the speedometer drive and ran it until they went to 0's and the tenths started on the 1. Then I took my finger and pushed all the tumblers up so they are centered in the viewing window.

Re: Resetting Odometer

Why would you want to roll back the odometer?

As we all know, you can't roll it back by driving in reverse...

Re: Resetting Odometer

i know this is a little old, but i was going through mine today and i just wanted to add that post 14 is THE way to do it, easiest by far. but what i noticed is that when you giong from left to right, line each metal tab up with the 5 digit. once your done and you put all the metal tabs back on the housing, all the 0's are facing where the window goes.

i tried it with the 9's, and they read 444444...if this makes any sense

That is one of those things that is hard to diagnose unless you are holding it in your hand... What does it do if you remove the plastic?
