Home Made HEI Tester...

After a day balancing on the radiator of my 79 dually with my feet/legs stuck straight up in the air, I decided I had to have a tester for HEIs. That's just too hard to do in the truck. Changed the module-nope...changed the rotor-nope...cap & coil-nope...complete HEI-yup!
Here's my answer to bench testing. Pics should tell the story.

That must be on of those new fancy POD ( power on demand ) kind of distributors. I see 8 spark plugs, and 8 plug wires, but only 6 little blue flames. DUDE what is up with that haha

If the dizzy is being spun fast enough, it's possible that all 8 plugs fired while the shutter of the camera was taking the photo, especially the dark picture

Re: Home Made HEI Tester...

My guess would be hes using a drill and an oil pump rod to spin it. Reason I guess that is cause thats what I use for mine that I made in shop class in high school. Handy thing to have around. When you have a dist thats questionable. Yours looks way better than mine though!!

Re: Home Made HEI Tester...

Wow! Some would say "overkill" just to test a distributor since most of us just pull the plug wires and ground them... but I say inginuity.

Forgot to add... I bet some auto mechanic shop teacher would love to have it or borrow it as a teaching tool.

Re: Home Made HEI Tester...

You are all basically right...spin it by hand or drill, slow shutter made them all "show" in the pic, I used to just pull a plug wire & ground it, but too much "air time" dangling over the motor cured me.
I can now test all used ones before I install or sell them.
