Choke? What is this in the pic?!
Ok. So, I know very little about engines, but am trying to learn! Yesterday, me and a friend put on some ceramic coated long tube headers ($186 from Summit!!) Anyways, I noticed this linkage, its in the pic. I can pull on it a little bit. What is this??!? I have trouble with starting when cold, takes a long time to get it to turn over. I bought an Edelbrock 60 w/ elec choke from a board member and hope it fixes the start problem. BUT WHAT IS THIS THING?!?!

Looks like the kickdown for an auto trans.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
Transmission kick down cable, it hooks up on the drivers side of the carb.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
It is the kick down cable from your T-350 transmission. It originally hooked to your caeb linkage and the slotted portion bolted to a bracket that bolted to your intake. You could adjust it to where the trans would down shift when you stepped on the throttle. You can still adjust it now, just pull it out a little and put a wire tie or something to hold it in place. It should be pulled out some anyway, it provides extra pressure to the clutch packs. If pulled out all of the way it may not shift into 3rd until 40-50 mph or so.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
If it is the trans cable for a 700R4 then it is not just a kick-down cable, it is THE cable that controls the whole transmission and how and when it shifts. Not having it hooked up or adjusted right will seriously shorten the life of the transmission!!
If you don't know which transmission it is, go under the truck and loock at the oil pan on the transmission. The 350 trans. has a square oil pan with a corner angled off, while the 700R4 has a funky shaped pan. If its been working for a while you probably got a 350, but you better double check and look at the pan.

How much should this be pulled out? I pushed it in some, but it still doesn't shift to 3rd until about 35, seems late doesn't it? |

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
To adjust the detent cable for your TH350 transmission, with the throttle wide open, pull the cable all the way out and connect it in that position. Your transmission then will have proper pressure and should have detent, or passing gear when throttle is depressed to the floor. The transmission also has a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the vacuum modulator that controls the speed when it upshifts and the relative firmness of the shift. The vacuum line from the modulator must be connected to manifold vacuum (full vacuum at idle). If the transmssion shifts too late or soon, the vacuum modulator may be bad. If trans fluid is present where the vacuum hose connects to it, it is bad. Unless you have an original large diameter vacuum modulator, it is adjustable to fine tune the shifts. To adjust the shifts, remove the vacuum hose from the modulator, with a small screwdriver, turn the screw inside the vacuum port. To raise the points and firmness, turn the screw in (clockwise). To lower and soften the shifts, turn the screw out (counterclockwise). Test drive after each adjustment. I would do a half turn at a time until you have it where you want it.

I don't have a kick down cable though. Just a switch mounted beside the gas pedal. |

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
On a TH400 transmission, there is no cable. The TH400 uses an electric kickdown, hence the switch on the gas pedal and a wire running down to the left side of the transmission. The vacuum modulator is responsible for upshift timing and feel, and part throttle downshifts, whereas the electric solenoid is responsible for full throttle downshifts. the modulator can be adjusted just like one on a TH 350. If adjusting it doesn't do what you want, you may have to have a transmission shop look at it for a repair or adjustment in the valve body or servo.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
If I set mine up with the throttle wide open it wants to shift down at odd times. If I pull on the cable it moves all the way out but then if I pull a little harder it move another 1/4" or so. Do I set it so I have it completely out or just before the extra movement. BTW my 350 was just rebuilt so eveything should be working correctly. I just switched from and Edelbrock to a Q-jet so the length of the linkage to the carb is different. It had a small extention on the linkage to make it work for the Edelbrock but it is to tight if I hook it up directly to the Q-jet.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
No switch that I can see in those pictures. If you have a TH400 the switch should be on the gas pedal.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
it's the switch with the orange and yellow wire in screamin's post. That sw wont work on an Edelbrock carb you can use a Lokar kick down switch or a nitrous wide open throttle switch.

Re: Choke? What is this in the pic?!
does anyone happen to know where this connects to on the tranny ? I was under the impression that the 400 only used vacum.
