I've always joked with my friend, what if the ricer muffler was the best sounding muffler ever on a V8? It's just an oversized glass pack!

Re: Call me tokyo drift

Seriously, I do wonder if a pipe that big really does help the performance of a four cyl. doesn't it need a certain amount of back pressure for peak performance, or does this type of exhaust system achieve that from the catalytic converter?

It does little when the rest of the car is still barely running 2inch pipe. It's just a glass pack in all reality.

That type of muffler does not help much because its at the end of the exhaust system already. A stock muffler that far away from the engine is not much of a restriction, which is why imports put the oem muffler as far back as possible. What really matters is what's bolted to the engine. A good header can improve performance on a 4 cylinder engine, just as it would any other engine. However, the intake tract would also need to be opened up to take advantage. Some may argue with me, but my understanding is that 4 cycle engines don't need backpressure per se. However, a properly tuned exhaust manifold/header can improve performance by providing a scavenging effect. The velocity of the exhaust gases going through the exhaust manifold/header can actually help to evacuate (suck out) more exhaust gases from the engine cylinders, thus allowing more fresh air and fuel to enter the cylinder and producing more power.

Re: Call me tokyo drift

I can tell you from experience that they need back pressure I had a 1.8 corolla with a header and 2 1/2 exhaust and it ran good but when I tore my tail pipe and muffler off in some road construction it had no balls at all just loud and it was header and 3 foot of straight pipe.

If that thing is actually hooked up, someone needs to go over and give you a nice hearty kick in the nads! If it's not hooked up, it's pretty funny and I think you should continue the drifter/tweaker/crack smoker theme!! (one in the same I believe)

just FYI, a motor (any motor) SHOULDN'T need backpressure on the exhaust to function!!! the reason performance sometimes drops after an exhaust is uncorked is because the carburetor or EFI is calibrated too lean!!! re-jetting the carburetor or re-mapping the FI SHOULD fix the problem!!!!

No, back pressure effects driving characteristics and the power/tq curves. This is why people have different preferences on headers vs manifolds, or long and short tube headers. In many cases a 'tuned' amount of back pressure is required on a n/a motor given your motor's performance range. Look at 2 stroke motors of any type for an example, everything from nitro RC cars to bikes have 'tuned' pipes that create a specific amount of back pressure.

It doesn't need it to 'function', but it needs it to make the most effective power. Unless your running boost and you need that exhaust outta there quick to keep on spooling.

I do respect what your saying and I don't want to get into a big argument about this, but............. you are confusing presure wave tuning (kinda like ram tuning.....kinda the principle that hilborn FI works on) with back pressure. different diameter and length pipes make a difference on the place in the rpm range where pressure wave tuning is the strongest.

here is a link that explains some of it, I originally came across the Idea in another book, but I did a quick search on google and came up with this, Look at the pressure wave tuning paragraph..........
