Ok so I am an idiot I cannot get the tumbler out of my Ign switch on my 67 gmc!! I inserted a stiff wire in the hole and I can feel the spring release but the key and tumbler won't come out. Any special way I should be pulling twisting or????

Keep at it.They tend to get a bit stuck,probably from being worn in for 40 years.I have had some luck lubing with a penetrating oil.Usually have to jiggle them pretty good to get them out.

push on the spring loaded plate, and twist to the left. If for some reason you have an Acc position to the left (67 and early 68 don't) then put it in that position and start from there.
You do have the key in it while doing this right?

After you push the spring loaded pin in with the stiff wire and turn the cylinder further to the left you have to pull the wire out to finish turning it or it will bind. You can also turn it too far after you pull the wire out. That is when you have to wiggle the cylinder back and forth a little bit. If you wiggle it too much the pin will pop back out and you will have to start over. You should not have to put excessive turning pressure on it or push down hard on the spring loaded pin. Gentle and patience are the key words here..

I never could get mine to come out, me and 2-3 other guys fiddled with that dang thing forever! I didnt think it was ever going to come out, untill he met Mr. Air Hammer! Gotta love those Door, ignition, glovebox key combo's! Use a 2x4 behind it to brace your dash, and plan on buying a new bezel and switch, Last resort only!! Hope ya get the angle on the dangle and dont have to use this method!

any way to do it without the key, just put a newer LT motor in ma truck and am using the newer steering collum, the ones with the key in them and the bright/dim switch and cruise control and air bags and all that. would like to get the old key dealio out of the way but no keys.

Take the passenger side door lock out. There should be a code number stamped on it on the order of the pic below. Your numbers and letters may be a little different. Take the lock cylinder or the code number to your local professional locksmith and he can make a key to fit the door locks. If none of the locks have been changed the key should fit your ignition.

On this note I spoke with a friend that is also trying to get his ignition out also and has been fighting it like crazy. He said that he had been trying for a couple of days and decided before he went in for the night he shot silicone spray in the ignition and let it sit over night. When he tried the next day it popped out first try. Maybe shoot a little spray-- let it sit over night -- give her a try......

Don't know if it's different on each year but on my 72 the switch itself has a small hole in the bottom that you can stick a small screwdriver in and pry (push handle towards firewall) the cylinder out. This is along with pressing the pin and turning to the left.

You can do that but I don't usually recommend it because people get too heavy handed, and if you break the retainer tabs off of the cylinder (not likely) or the retainer ring off the inside of the switch (very likely) it is junk. If the cylinder is in the right position it should come out without prying.

Well sucess today!! I have let it sit for a week with rustbuster in it and today I pushed the wire in the hole turned the key to the left and it moved slightly and the tumbler slid right out!!!!!
