Steering shaft question

Will the collapsible steering shaft from a 67-72 C-10 fit without any modifications in a '63 C-10? Thanks.

Re: Steering shaft question

I think you will have to shorten it. I know I did on my '66. You should be able to drill out the nylon rivets and collapse it, then redrill and re-pin.

Re: Steering shaft question

It depends on what your column and steering box are. If you are putting the complete steering column from the 2nd gen, then you might get it to fit, but the wheel may be sticking out to far for you. the collaspable shaft can be modified to shorten the length by drilling or knocking out the plastic pins in the hollow part of the lower shaft, then redrilling and replacing them with new ones, or simply welding it up. I have heard the "Slop-joint" collapses to make up the the difference in length on some manual gear boxes, so you dont have to modify it. I put a 75 powersteering box in my 63 and had to cut my lower solid shaft back 1 3/4" then cut the lower hollow part of the collapsable shaft off and slid it over the solid shaft, then drilled holes to plug weld.

Re: Steering shaft question

It's the original '63 column and manual gear box. Thanks for the replies and the pics.
