Is there an NP203 posi?
Since the NP203 acts as an open differential when not locked, has anybody ever made a posi (limited slip, whatever) for it? When not locked, it sends all the power to the axle with the least traction, or with no driveshaft. Why not have a posi in the internal diff that sends the power to the axle with better traction? I may be missing something simple here.

That's what the loc selection is for...

Re: Is there an NP203 posi?
The term differential is used as a descriptive, but there are no simularities to how a rear works. It comes down to the axle differential when controlling individual wheel spin.
All I know about 203s is everyone I ever saw was converted to part-time.guys in the mountains hated them and blamed them for causing wrecks when they hit a slick patch on a curve. When the front kicks in unexpectedly it pulls straight.Other than that it`s just a weak design that eats gas and requires higher maintainence.

The short answer is no.

It just ties the two axles together with friction plates that allow some slipping so that the "differential" action is still maintained.....unless the traction available to the tire is less than the clutches. It is not capable of "sending" power to one side or the other, it is just making it harder for the differential action to work. It is not locking anything.

have you ever pulled on of the drive shafts off with out putting it in loc? just like a diff, once the resistance is gone it sends all the power in that dirrection. |

Re: Is there an NP203 posi?
As far as the "internal posi" goes, isn't that kinda what a newer style SUV/Denali Truck All-wheel drive case does? I don't know if that is anywhere close to being correct, I just always mentally pictured it doing something similar to that.

Answer 2: What I meant was, although they both differentiate in the same way(result),the 203 has no effect on the wheels. The 203 differentiates power from front to back(axles) and the third member differentiate from side to side(wheels). Answer 3:No confusion in Burt`s answer...No. ![]()

Re: Is there an NP203 posi?
yes, the 246 are essentaily a friction posi, and just like a friction posi they wear out and lose grip.
