Water Pump Pulley Do-over
Well, last Thursday, driving the kids home and heard a thump under the hood, quickly followed by the GENERATOR light and temp gauge going real hot. Thought it was just a belt but when I pulled it over the water pump pulley was just dangling and the belt was fine.
So, flat bed home. Pulley broken. Where do you get such a thing? Fortunately there was a swap meet on Saturday. Looked high and low and found a MOPAR pulley that was just about right. I had to drill another set of four holes since the MOPAR pattern was off just enough not to work. It wobbles a bit more than I'd like but until I find an exact replacement, it'll have to do. Here's some pics

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
Yikes! I hadn't thought of it going through the rad but I guess it is going pretty fast...

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
I have never seen a pulley do that before. I know some pulleys had a reinforcement washer/disc under them. Maybe you need one?

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
turning fast, and pulling air in towards it, which would naturally thrust it forward... like a propeller on a prop driven plane... see it all the time on the trucks at work and in the rad shop.

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
Uncle Watts-No wrecking yards near me have the classic stuff so I was lucky to find something close at the swap meet. It was a 90 minute drive but well worth it for $5. Plus I got to see a lot of great cars and even a few trucks.

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
Fortunate for you Legolas it was the center of the pulley that broke out and not the water pump flange. Since the fan and spacer were still securely bolted in place they stayed put and kept the pulley from coming off completely. Don't know when I've seen a pulley fail like that.

Post a "Want to Buy" add in the parts forum. Someone will come up with one for you.

Re: Water Pump Pulley Do-over
Boog-After 42 years, I figured it didn't owe anything to anybody!
I'm thinking about replacing the water pump too when I have some cash. It can't be original too. I've replaced the water pump on my '95 Astro and '94 Caprice so I figure 10-15 years is probably tops unless the quality in '67 was much higher. The PO may have replaced it a few times as well. The rad is definitely a must-do but it might have to wait until next summer. ![]()
