LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

Has anyone (Successfully)installed an ls motor ( 4.8,5.3,6.0L) in one of our trucks? I need assistance on the motor mounts. I used the stockers and it fit ( surprise here) but the headers/manifolds do not. I also bought some CPP perches, they didnt work. Any assistance would be great. BTW I have absolutely no welding skills at all.

Where were you having clearance problems with the manifolds? and which vehicle is your ls swap from?

trucks/fbodies/vettes had different manifolds. You may also want to consider S10/ls swap headers as they are designed to clear the smaller frame on the s10.

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

My engine is out of a 2002 Silverado with 44K miles, it has the 4l60e trans. I have Sanderson Headers that are for the S10 conversion. I tried to use CPP mounts but they put the engine way too far forward, will hit my rad and cooling fans. So this is why I used my stockers. I have seen the ones that ECE sells, and I am trying to do this on a budget, so you see 230.00 for those is a little high for me right now. THere are some other ones available

http://www.resto-modtechnology.com/s...%7C-GMC/Detail

But they are chrome and I dont want chrome, they are also $220.00. I am trying to do surgury on some stock ones I have extra, so to remove the hump on the top and some down towards the motor mount, then use the same guage steel, weld it up flat.

Any other suggestions?

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

I almost forgot, I have purchased a set of Fbody manifolds and the DS fits like it was made for it, the passenger side , does not. Can you cut and reweld on a manifold? it seams to have a ridge on the bottom of the manifold, without that I think it would fit.

I appreciate all of y'alls help.

ya, you can re-weld a manifold, but if its a cast peice it makes it trickier.
Speedway Motors has some ls1 "tight fit" headers for $175.

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

another option might be early camaro/firebird manifolds. they are made of tubing and not cast. easier to modify. 98-99 i think

where is your problem with fitment? If it is primarily with the top frame rail, dont worry about trimming it back to fit.

Clyde: Were you thinking of trying mounts like these?:

http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...number=ESM6372

Brothers has a mount kit for genIII motors too, but the price is a bit much.

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

Yes that is what I have, except there is another hole on the lower portion flat piece. You can gen them from POL also. About the same price. I saw those you are talking about and yea, $230.00 is way too high in my opinion. besides if these will work, then I can continue my build. It has lagged longer than expected and I wanted, just because of the exhaust manifold/header fitment.

Just curious.. Which of the CPP mounts did you try? I was looking at the side weld in ones.

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

I used the gray ones, tubular. bolt in. they just set the engine too far forward so my rad/cooling fans wouldn't fit. The weld in are fine, except if you want to change it back, there would req more work. besides, I dont have welding skills. I still have them if you are wanting them. I paid $129.00 plus ship[ping for them.

Right now I'm still shopping for a engine. Just doing my research before I get knee deep into anything.

Clyde can you post some pics of the engine bay showing your install? Also some pics of the mounts and headers? That would be helpful.

Re: LS motor in a 64-66? Anybody? no really!

Guys,

Just for reference, you can make the late model LS motor mounts work and they are really nice and are out of the way of everything.

See TomLambs thread for how he did it.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=346598&page=2

Here is how I did it using SSR mounts that came with my engine, the AC compressor, exhaust manifolds etc. from the SSR fit with no interference. Just had to change the PS pump resevoir.

It takes some fabrication but the engine is very easy to get in and out. Just dangle it over the crossmember and drop in the six mounting bolts.
