My carb needs a rebuild so should I replace it or try to find someone to rebuild it??Is there a better carb out there that will let me use my stock air cleaner?My engine is the stock 307 with the original 2 barrel.CJ.

I always say if you're thinking of buying another one, why not try rebuilding the one you have first? It's cheaper and gives you some good experience. You may be out 15-20 bucks but a rebuilt one is over $200.

I just rebuilt my quadrajet - it was worth the 2 hours. I am out 24 bucks on the rebuild kit and I get to keep the stock look. If I were to buy a core rebuilt one it would run me 300 to 400 dollars.

Sometimes, I'm afraid, there is stuff worn out that can't be rebuilt, or at least has to be replaced that isn't included in those little kits - that's always something to consider. I have a quadrajet on my '67 that I rebuilt but I still have a couple issues and in all likelihood if some extra cash shows up, I'll replace it and sell it.

rebuild kits do not come with a lot of the needles that where, the stuff to reseal the plugs that leak over time, the bushing kit to make the linkage new again and so on. To properly buy everything you need a proper rebuild will be 100 bucks. I decided on a new carb.

I've had good luck rebuilding an Autolite 2100 2 barrel and a Holley 600 4 barrel but I know that those were good cores to begin with. If the throttle shafts are good and all the linkage is good and the carb has not been messed with then it is worth it to rebuild yourself.

i have the stock rochester 2 barrel and 307 in my 72 burb. i rebuilt the carb but it still isn't quite right (probably human error). the q-jet is the perfect unit. it has smaller primaries for better economy and huge secondaries that will give more power than a 2 hole ever thought of doing. musclecar (powerblock tv) just aired (or re-aired) a segment on rebuilding the q-jet a couple weeks back. i knew they were good carbs but it was nice to hear the big boys denounce the "quadra-junk" nickname also.

Try giving NAPA a call. That's where I got my rebuild kit and it was only $18.

why do you think it needs rebuilt? the only thing a rebuild kit provides are gaskets and check balls. So if you suspect your carb is full of gunk from years of use by all means consider a rebuild. If the problem is more than gaskets and cleaning, (shaft bushings, linkage worn out, fuel leaking from the bottom of the bowl, etc.) don't waste your time. It has been my experience that the rebuilt carbs from the parts stores are not that great, you may solve your original problem but inherit another one. If replacement is your plan of attack, consider a new replacement such as eddlebrock or holley, although these replacements are generic and will usually require fine tuning by changing the jetting.
