New ignition switch locked up. Help!!!

I put a new ignition in my project , worked great when I put it in. Even turned it hoping the engine would magically turn over But went to turn it yesterday and now its locked up?! Anyone ever have this happen? If so how do you fix it??

Are you talking about a complete switch or just the ignition cylinder and key?

Try wiggling the key as you put it in and make sure it is going in all the way. The tumblers could be hanging up inside the lock cylinder. Does the key go in easily? Will it turn to the accessory position? Whatever you do don't try to force it or you will bend the tumblers inside the lock cylinder.

Come on Leon, how would you know anything about locks? I agree, sometimes new lock tumblers can be tricky. Leon covered it pretty well I think. The wiggle trick works often. I've also had a key that was cut too deep (I think, correct me if I'm wrong here Leon), and actually had to pull it out of the switch a tad to get the tumblers to line up correctly.

.. I'm just grabbing at straws here... Actually, if I was there I could probably figure it out in a couple of minutes but it is hard to diagnose something like this online.

Yes, pulling the key out a tad will work if the cuts are a little deep or the first cut is too far from the shoulder.

I'll mess with it and see if I can get something to work today. Thanks for the ideas.

You all have come up with "key" solutions.

You have a tumbler or the locking bar hanging up in the cylinder then. It should loosen up with use. If it continues to do it you can try spraying a small amount of spray lube with Teflon in it. Just don't get carried away..
