Lightbulb 3/4 Ton Rear Coils??

HI GUYS ...I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ANY KNOWLEDJABLE INDIVIDUALS ON 3/4 TONS TRUCKS (OR SUBS & PANELS IN PARTICULAR) IT SEEMS ALL I'VE EVER DONE IS 1/2 TON SHORT BEDS. I RECENTLY PICKED UP A 68 3/4 TON PANEL, & WAS EXPECTING TO FIND A LEAF SPRUNG REAR END, BUT TO MY SURPRISE IT HAD TRAILING ARMS & COILS. I THOUGHT ALL 3/4 TONS WERE LEAFS. ALSO DOES ANYONE HAVE OR NO THE PRODUCTION #s (HOW MANY WERE PRODUCED) ON PANELS IN 68?? THANKS GUYS

I've never seen a 3/4 ton coil sprung truck but I'm not an expert. Maybe it was a special order?

Every 2wd burb/panel that I have seen has been coil sprung. Pretty much the same as trucks. It should follow along the same lines as GMC=leaf and Chev=coils on the 3/4 ton trucks.

I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN ONE EITHER , BUT IT SHOULD MAKE THE CONVERSION OVER TO 1/2 TON 5 LUG ALOT EASIER, AS I ALREADY HAVE A REAREND & COMPLETE FRONT END OUT OF A 72

Interesting question.

In regards to pickup trucks Chevys had coils standard on 1/2 and 3/4 ton, with leafs optional. GMC's had leafs standard with coils option on 1/2 and 3/4 tons.

I have never seen a 2wd burb 1/2 or 3/4 ton with leafs either. I have seen 2 GMC burbs one a 1/2 ton, the other a 3/4 ton, both with coils and no mention of an option indicating such on the glove box. If GMC were true to form as with pickups, this would have been an option and listed as such. On a hunch, I'd bet that only coils were available on burbs for the simple fact of ride improvement on a vehicle designed more for passengers than cargo. Anyone have a 2wd burb with leafs?

As for panels, never seen more than 1.

Just about every 2wd 3/4 ton chevy I've seen has been coil sprung with the big HO52/72 10 bolt corporate axle. My first truck was set up that way, and the parts truck I found several months later by chance was set up the same way. Only trucks I've seen for sure with leafs are some GMC's and 4x4's...

I have seen a couple of 1/2 ton trucks with dana and coils, but I don't see them very often. I've seen 1 3/4 ton truck with coil and dana 60 so far...

There seems to be a little regional variation in this, but I'm with Cobalt. 95% of the Chevy's I've seen, wheter 1/2 or 3/4 ton, were coil spring trucks. My '72 'burb is coil spring with an HO52/72. But 95% of the GMC are leaf springs, including all 3 of the 70 3/4 tons I have (one is a Longhorn, so that doesn't really count since they were ALL leaf, but 2 1/2" like 4x4 instead of 2 1/4" like 2x4.) I looked at a couple of 3/4 ton leaf Chevy's and both had 60's but most of the 4x4's I have seen had the HO axle. Would be interesting to compare where trucks were made to see if there was a preponderance of one type of suspension or axle housing at certain plants and certain years.

Further Observations:

All leaf spring 3/4 tons I've seen or had had dana 60's. All 3/4 ton coil spring trucks have had HO52/72.

As for 3/4 ton 4x4's, I've seen both dana 60's and HO52/72's Coincidentally, all the dana's were GMC's, all the HO52/72's were chevys.

This is in New England, though several of the 2wd 3/4 tons were from AZ.

Mine IS a coil spring dana 60 3/4 ton with a 7500 GVW rating! It IS the original rearend and has not been transpllanted from a leaf spring truck ! It also has HD rear coils . Its probably something to do with the fact it has a close ratio NP435 4 speed and originally had a big block.

It was built in Fremont Ca and was delivered March 1968 to La Brea CA. according to the protectoplate.

I can get the numbers off it if anyone doesnt believe me or still insists they Never came this way.

Never meant to imply my observations were the only way it could be. Just what I have seen. I believe almost any combo could have been had.

mikep: cool. Mark one up for dana60 coils.

Turns out both my 3/4 ton 2wd LWB trucks were made in '69 in Fremont, CA as well. Both coils with 7500 GVW limit and HO72/52 axles. Just for the record books.
