Just drove 1300 miles without a hitch...

Just thought I'd share that I went to Sacramento, CA this last week from Astoria, OR (about 680 miles each way) in the GMC and she didn't give me one problem. I guess this is kind of a victory post. Everybody thought I was crazy to drive "that old truck" down that far.

It just goes to show that 50 year technology with proper maintenance is just as reliable as 2009 technology. Except, of course, the gas mileage.....

I also learned that driving that far doing only 60 MPH takes waaay too long.

P.S. Thanks again to Chevytrucknut for the clutch!

Just means you get to see everything along the way and no speeding tickets.

Corts60,
Congrats on making the trip without a hitch. I have been thinking about taking my Sons 64 on a shakedown run and maybe making a Vacation out of it. That is if I can talk my Wife into doing without all the Modern Day Conveniences. I put a 3.08:1 Diff in my Sons truck so It will have a little better top end without so much quickness on the bottom end. I did that just because my Son is 18 and that 327 has a few to many ponies to let him loose in it with the 4.10:1 Diff it used to have. Im hoping the Gas Mileage will be fairly decent in it, that is if I can keep my foot out of it. If you have some pics of the trip including your truck post them.

Good lord, I I've done 300 miles in a day and thought that was an accomplishment! congrats to you on a safe, fun trip. I've found that these trucks are quite comfortable (albeit noisy ) on longer road trips

Re: Just drove 1300 miles without a hitch...

Believe it or not I just didn't get any pictures along the road....There wasn't a whole lot of spectacular photo ops on I-5, maybe around Mt. Shasta but I totally forgot about it.

Here are some with road grime all over her at home though.

jonathan-m - Yeah it was looooong. The truck minds well on the road, doesn't rattle or wander but it definitely gets a little old holding the gas pedal. I was thinking about cutting different length sticks for different speeds to stick between the seat and gas pedal...

Good for you, what an adventure. I imagine you got plenty of attention when you stopped for gas, etc. Glad it was incident free. If you're going to do it again cruise control will be a welcome addition and the electronic versions are relatively simple to install.

Longest trip we ever made was from North Idaho to Santa Cruz about 10 years ago - about 1,000 miles each way, which also included a photo op at Mt. Shasta. Being that far from home in something so old inspired conversations at every rest stop.

I hear ya on the gas pedal, Every time I take a longer road trip I spend half of the time trying to figure out how to rig up some sort of cruise control setup... guess I haven't taken enough long trips, 'cause i still haven't figured it out yet

That, my friend, is why we build 'em. I think I'm gonna go see my brother tomorrow, in the '65.

Wish I'd known you were passin by. Could have met you, at one of your many gas stops, along I5. How much $$$ did you burn in gas?

Re: Just drove 1300 miles without a hitch...

Congrats on the trip. My brother lives in Medford, OR and my mother lives in Willows, CA, both right off the 5. I have driven from Medford, OR to Sacramento, CA many times, but not in one of my old rigs.

I bet you and your rig looked awesome cruising during that trip. FYI, I have an Accessory Installation manual, that shows a factory cruise control option for the 4-5-6 Chevy trucks, but I don't know about the '60-'66 GMC trucks. I will check into this in my manuals and share it on this thread, if I can find it. The guys on 6066GMCguy.com might know about it.

In any case, thanks for sharing and congrats on an event-free trip.

It's funny but a group of teenagers came flying by me doing about 80-85 in a BMW and while they were passing I could see the girl in front clicking away on a camera...

Get a Georgia over drive. A sawed off broom handle for your cruise control . That is Old Skool. Ha Ha
