Parts from "Cluncker" trucks.

I went to the local auto salvage place the other day and saw rows of Pre 1999 Chevy Suburbans turned in as "Clunckers" during the rebates. They pour something in the engine to destroy them, the bastards, but what about other stuff. All the ones I saw were 4x4 so the tranny is out in those cases. Has anyone used the bucket seats out of a Suburban? I can get power seats for $60 each and center consoles for $35. I would think that with the overflow of these things that parts will get pretty cheap. What else can we use off one for a resto-mod?

Re: Parts from "Cluncker" trucks.

It was federally mandated that the dealership drain the engine oil and liquid silica run in the motors until they locked up...so they could not be put back on the road.

Many of these vehicles would have been excellent candidates for those who didn't qualify for financing to purchase a new $15K or higher vehicle, but instead our gov. dictates destroying them. Additionally, only certain salvage yards were allowed to accept the cash for clunkers vehicles.

It was documented that four of the top five models purchased in the program where not from the Big Three...not much of a stimulus for the American economy.

I've seen several TBI trucks if you want to do an intake swap. Saw a few with serpentine accessory drives on them. You already mentioned interior. Disc brakes can be swapped also along with power steering.

Yeah I wanted to grab a setup from a late model as well. All the seats I seen were benches.

Didnt the big 3 have to increase production? GM rehired more than 1300 employees. Hyundai rehired 3000 in Alabama. These cars and trucks got me buying more parts from the junkers.

Re: Parts from "Cluncker" trucks.

I was able to snag a serp. belt set up off a 99 truck and was planning on getting a few more since the guy at the dealership only wanted 20 bucks for everything. I got one and went back 2 days later when I had a chance and they were GONE.

Are they selling parts off of the clunkers? I was under the impression that nothing was allowed to be salvaged off of these and that the entire vehicle was destined to be shredded?

Our salvage will let you have anything except, crank, block, and heads, everything else is up for grabs.

Re: Parts from "Cluncker" trucks.

Our local pick a part has a note under the hood and in the vehicle that it was part of the CARS program and has internal engine damage. But has no restrictions as to what is for sale off the vehicles. Kind of funny here is most the trucks turned in were the EFI Ford half tons. Too bad GM only had TBI set ups on the earlier trucks.

Same here. At least he didn't mention any restrictions, but same note.

I'm waiting for a 2wd to come through for an OD auto tranny. I'm still trying to figure out my trucks eventual color combo so I know what color seats to get.
