What's the deal on 70 4x4s and front brakes?

All I can find listed is parts for drums. I have discs. Now I am wondering if I have a swapped setup from an old owner. I have had people tell me that it was an option in 70, and some have told me it wasn't. Any help?

If it was a legit option, does anyone know what part numbers I should be looking for when doing a pad job?

Discs came in 1971. Either the front axle has been swaped or the vin has been changed. I dont think it was an option, last thing i can think of is that the truck was made in late 1970 and somehow got a 1971 drivetrain...

Probably 71-72 front brakes but you should probably verify it before ordering parts. Since something non-stock was swapped in you will want to make sure it's not from something other than a 71/72.

That has all gone through my head. If I still had the option sheet decal in the glove box, I'd be golden, but no dice. I am thinking I'll start with some 71 parts and compare them.

Discs were standard in 71. It wouldn't be listed on the option sheet since it was standard. Alot of people do the upgrade since so many years of front ends bolt in.

I guess I'll start by decoding the BOM numbers on the axle tube to try and ID the axle.

It may be an axle swap, or just a "knuckle out" swap. You can convert the '70 axle to discs by swapping the knuckle and all the outward parts. So... you could have a hybrid. I learned alot of the details doing a complete axle swap on my '68 last month. All kinds of differences in hoses, lines, proportional valves, master cylinders, etc. Pictures of all this stuff would go along way in helping you out.

Re: What's the deal on 70 4x4s and front brakes?

The master cyl is not one I recognize, but the prop valve looks to have been replaced more recently than most parts and looks like the later version available in the LMC catalog. I'd be willing to bet it was a knuckle out swap. The brake hoses are fairly recent as well.

I'll try and get some pics this weekend to see what I can dig up for comparison.

ever think of trying a set from the other 21 years that disc brakes were used???????

they are all the same. 2wd 4wd 1/2-3/4. d44 or 10b. calipers vari slightly with piston bore and outer castings but they will all use the same pad.

See, THAT is some useful information!

Yes, this is the FIRST GM product of any kind I have ever owned.
