Chrome or Grey CHEVROLET letters on Tailgate Band??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have seen both chrome and grey CHEVROLET letters on tailgate bands and wonder if anyone knows the history of what is/was correct.

Actually they are both correct technically. Sometime after 1972 GM started to put the plastic letters on the replacement bands. So if you have a NOS band more than likely it has the painted letters unless it is a real old one. The repos all use chrome letters i think, and also you can buy chrome letters to replace the plastic ones if you want.

I think the chrome/ metal ones were the early originals, and the gray were later GM parts. I can't remember if the gray ones were even metal. I have also seen NOS tailgate bands in woodgrain and black. I am not sure why the difference on those either.

Some guy at the last big swap meet told me about this. I was looking at one that he had, and he told me that he had a nicer one in his trailer, which he took out and showed me. He said that it was the rarer one with the plastic letters, which he said were a GM part replacement that he got in the in early 80's. They were grey painted plastic letters. It really has got to be much like the dash bezels. They must have saved money by not chrome plating anything for NOS parts to save money. Trevor
