How do you get the doors to shut with new Seals
The doors on my Sons 64 are kicking my butt. I cant get them to close. They are latching but they are open about 1/2 to an inch in the back of the door. My problem is if I try to bring the door out in the front, non of the panels will align. So has anyone had this kind of problem and if you have what did you do to fix the problem? These doors shut great before I took it apart to do the bodywork so they should shut now I would think???
Thanks for any help with this, JRBECK64 |

If you put new door seals in, they will relax over time and allow the doors to seat properly. Parking it outside in the warm sun will help the seals form to the inside of the door or inside a warm shop for a few days.

Thanks for the help. I will kick on the heat in the shop and see if it helps. These doors are really driving me crazy. Here is where Patients comes in handy. Somewhere along the way I have lost mine and need to find it again. I figured out why the doors are not quite right. The guy that owned it before me put about an inch or more of filler behind where the doors close in the back. Now I am trying to hang the doors with a light skim of filler behind the doors and its not aligning. Wonder why. Now I have to shim the doors to make up for the other guys bad bodywork and hopefully will be able to get it close to where it needs to be. My Son is not to happy with the fact that he needs to pull the front of the truck back apart to rehange the doors and shim them properly. What I am wondering at this point is will I be able to shim the fenders properly to get them to align with the doors in the front when I shim the doors. The neverending project continues. I had the same problem, until joe231 recommended removing the strikers and hooking a ratchet-strap to the inside door handles and ratchet away, squeezing the doors toward eachother. Then leave it out in the sun for a few days. Works great!

When I was doing the bodywork on this truck I noticed a lot of Filler behind the door where it wraps around the back of the cab. When I started thinking about it today I figured out what the guy did that owned the truck before me did was hange the door without shims and do the bodywork to make it look right. When I took all that Filler off of the metal behind the door it threw the symetry of the door off. I ended up shimming the door out about 1/8th of an inch on the top hinge to get the door to set right. It was the same on both sides so the first one took forever and the second took about 10 minutes. Anyway I think I got it done and after the seals loosen up a bit I will re-adjust the strikers to bring the doors in just a little more. Again thanks for the help. JRBECK64 |

Re: How do you get the doors to shut with new Seals
I read this the other day.......Makes alot of since to me ........It's important to install the weather seal with a pie-cut where the two ends meet at the bottom of the door. This cut allows air trapped inside the seal to escape when the seal is trying to compress as the door is closed.

Here is some after pictures of the doors when we adjusted them. I know the striker plates need adjusting in a little more but compared to what they looked like this morning they look almost perfect!!!

Re: How do you get the doors to shut with new Seals
I have also read some post on another forum that when installing the weather striping that you need to pull it as you are installing it this will cause the weather striping to stretch a little or become thinner, be careful not to pull it too much after all you want it to seal
