Nice Dually Longhorn in the Michigan,Ohio area

Found this on Craigslist, 1970 1 ton Cab & Chassis truck with a longhorn bed...if its as solid and as the owner claims its a steal at 3,500. Would be nice to see a board member snatch it up.

they were/are federally mandated on all dual rear wheel trucks. On these trucks when you cheked the DRW option, you were charged for the DRW, then the added required options, being the marker/ID lights on top. and 68 and 69 you got charged for the marker lights too... also required but still optional in these years.
Besides, marker/ID lamps are cool

That does look like a nice truck. What style cab lights are those? Are they the same as the 73 ups? I can't see in the pic and the listing is expired. So what cab lights are "stock" or standard equipment for these trucks?

69 and 70 had a hockey puck lookin lens. In 71 they went to the fireman's hat style that they used till 92 or so.

I`ve only seen hockey pucks on`69s.I can believe some`70s got them.But,I`ve had a few`70 trucks that all had the later style.I think on a heavier truck they add to the looks.Makes them more of a handsome truck.I`ve installed them for that effect.What I couldn`t believe is when Danbury or Franklin Mint came out with that shortbed Cheyenne Super/10 model with cab lights.it sure messes up that model and doesn`t repesent that truck very well,either.I don`t believe I`ve ever seen a truck like that with them.

so tell me more about the factory dually option. What axle did they use? What was the typical GVWR on these things? I mean, a regular 1 ton could carry pretty much whatever you throw at it. These must have been pretty amazing...

All of the dually 67-72 trucks I have ever owned had Eaton HO-72 rear ends.

Im sure the truck has sold, I seen it a couple of weeks ago about two miles from my house, for sale on the side of the road. Didn't have a chance to look it over, wish I would have. It looked great from the road.

So any dually in these trucks had to be a cab chassis? And more than likely only had a HO72 rear?

Special-K is touching on the terminology, in that if a truck is a dually, it has a wide rear end with 4 wheels. A cab/ chassis truck has a much narrower rear end so the 4 wheels combined in the back don't stick out any further than the single front wheels do.

Technically, he's 100 percent right. I just call any truck with 6 wheels a dually.

All 67-72 trucks with 6 wheels were cab/chassis with the narrow rear end. In 73, they began the dually trucks with wide rear end and a bed, as well as continuing to sell the cab/chassis which came with no bed at all. They were intended to be up fitted after the sale with whatever bed configuration best suited the customer's uses. My current 78 is a cab/chassis. The flatbed is the same width as the cab and doesn't stick out beyond the sides of the cab when viewed from the front.

So then are the leaf springs narrower like on the ford cab chassis trucks? And is the frame the same width as well? Thanks for the help guys. After seeing a couple of these, I am thinking of doing this to my project now.

the single rear wheel rear end, and dual rear wheel rear end are the exact same.
You could also get the DRW option on 3/4 ton trucks, which could be had with a dana, but it is too weak to do any seriouse work with. So stock set ups, the best bet is the HO 52 for the 3/4 ton, or the HO72 in the one tons.

Thaks Longhorn man. What Dana was this that was a DRW axle, but weak? If I decide to go DRW I might just use a D70HD from my brother's 88 V30 since i know it is ready to go. I haven't seen any HO72's recently and doubt there are many decent ones left around.

any dana that came in a 67 - 72 3/4 ton has verry weak axle shafts. Stock big block trucks have been known to shatterr them.

Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info, that is good to know. My Longhorn has a D60 in it and I'm putting a diesel in it so it probabaly won't last long. I guess it will get my D70 or the dually D70HD.
