Stock caliper type on a 71' c20
I need to know if my 71' c20 custom camper has clip on or bolt on front calipers. The fronts are completely stock. Is this something I can check by just looking at it?
Thanks for your help. Last edited by nicke; 10-13-2009 at 01:50 PM. |

Re: Stock calipsr type on a 71' c20
Not saying there isn't such a thing, but I have never heard of clip-on calipers. I would be a little afraid they would "clip-off" at a bad time.
All calipers for all the different kind of cars/trucks I've worked on have always been bolt-on. Some didn't want to "bolt-off" and I have scars to prove it. (some of the brake application might have e-clips on the slider pins if that's what you're asking, but I don't know about 71 gm) Last edited by 71tahoe; 10-13-2009 at 04:08 PM. |

They are long pins that bolt in and have an allen head on the end. If you look behind the the wheel you should be able to see them. There are 2 one top and one bottom.

Re: Stock calipsr type on a 71' c20
I am still not sure of what I have. I want to purchase these drop spindles.
http://www.airbagit.com/drop_spindle...pi-gm7191d.htm When I talked to the guy he said that there were two types (bolt on and clip on). He said that the bolt on types are help on by two bolts. The other type has a pin that is used to secure it. Is it true that there were two types on the 71' and if so why? I havent yet had a chance to check my truck as it is in storage and I want to buy these spindles. Thanks again for the help. |

Chevys use bolt on calipers. Fords have a "clip" type device that holds their calipers on. Personally I wouldn't lower a 3/4 ton truck. I saw your truck on your purchase post. Nice looking original. I would just fix it up. If you want something to customize I would look for a 1/2 ton short bed.
But it is your truck. |

Re: Stock calipsr type on a 71' c20
c10 and 20 use the bolt on style that is used from 71-87 on all 2wd and 4wd.
the reason they as is because that spindle looks like a generic add and they give you the proper app for the brake type when you order. the clip on style is used on d60 front axles and 1t from 73+, i dont know what the 71-72 1tons used. but they dont mount the same, they dont use the same pads, they dont use the same lines and they are not interchangable. |
