A/C Cab Question

Is the air flap under the cowl, made of steel on an A/C cab? Got a small leak in my cab and pretty sure that's where the water's coming from, I'd like to weld it shut.

Re: A/C Cab Question

air flap under the cowl? do you mean the air vents on the sides? unless an A/C cab is totally different than non A/C i'm not picturing the area that you are talking about.

Re: A/C Cab Question

There is an air flap under the cowl on the passenger's side, pretty sure it's vacuum operated. I can't remember if it's steel or not. If you pull the cowl you can see it on an A/C cab.

Ah yes, the first rain in Los Angeles in... what? 10 months? literally! Great time to start finding new leaks, and other foul weather related problems. Good luck sealing it up!

Re: A/C Cab Question

I've been waiting for this for a while, to see if shaving my firewall cured the leak. No such luck, but I did finally find the leak, or at least I think I did.

Re: A/C Cab Question

The one on my 72 is a composite or plastic. Not metal.

Well I was going to post a pic for you but it's not giving me that option for some reason....

Re: A/C Cab Question

most cab leaks are from dried out drip rail caulking

Thanks cdowns, but I think I've got it nailed now. It's leaking from under the airflap in the cowl.

You have to go into the "advanced" mode (there's a buttom to click on).

Re: A/C Cab Question

The fresh air intake (flap) does have a rubber seal around it that might be bad. You may try replacing it before just welding it up. The "flap" comes out real easy.

No attachments while migrating to the new site server is what I read so it looks like I won't be getting that pic to you anytime soon.

Do you know which vendors might have that seal? I think I might just close it up anyway though. Plan on going with Vintage Air and don't need it.

I've seen them but don't remember where. May have even been the whole door and not just the seal. I'm going with vintage Air as well but I'm not far enough along to know if the VA unit needs a fresh air intake or not so haven't made the decision to weld mine up just yet.

I'm like 99% sure the Vintage Air Surefit kit doesn't need it. They have the installation instructions available for download.

Re: A/C Cab Question

The AC vent you speak of would only leak into the fresh air plenum and what ever water there is should drain out the hole in the bottom of the plenum behind your kick panel vent unless it is clogged. The only hole I saw on my stripped cab today was in the top right corner for the antenna.
Mine is an AC cab. HTH

That's what I thought. Kick panel is clear, but water seems to be sitting there in the plenum and leaking into the cab at a seam towards the corner. Got a little bit of rust there as well, so evidently it's been doing this for years.

In the bottom left there is hole big enough to get your finger in or a mouse.

Re: A/C Cab Question

Thanks for the pic.
Mine is actually leaking towards the top by the cowl. Pretty sure water is coming in at the air flap and sitting in there.

Well like I said my cab stripped and I did look for you today as I was fabbing my under dash brakes and the only other thing under there is a butt load of seam sealer.
You don't wanna here this probably but in the front the windshield 0n each side I welded all that in rather than using caulk liked they did years ago. Oh , and the top also.

Re: A/C Cab Question

Any pics of where you welded? I'm pretty sure it's not the windshield. I went out there while it was raining and it's leaking right behind where the glovebox would go in the corner. This leak is driving me nuts.

As it should ,I will take em tomorrow in and out but I think it is your windshield area. Try this.. use masking tape and seal it off and use a water hose on it for a while. If that ain't it then do the cowl area.

Here's a pic of where it's leaking. Under the windshield is dry.

Re: A/C Cab Question

I'm not sure if that's under the fresh air intake or just beyond it but it's right in that area. that black plastic nut in your picture is the back side of the flap latch. I think I would take the flap out and just look and feel around and see what it looks like. You have to take out three 5/16" screws (just two if your A/C box is not on the firewall) and a spring loaded catch to get the flap out. My cab is at the blaster so I can't look at it for you or I would.

I think it's just to the right of the air flap. I'm going to see what's up with it this weekend. Thanks for the help guys.
