is a 700r4 4x4 tranny any good?

I got done redoing the flywheel and the torque converter on my 88' GMC and was looking at the transmission, the guy that was helping me said that he has a better one for me if I would want to trade up. I told him I would think on that cause the one I got now isn't giving me any trouble, so my question is should I save this tranny or trade up for I think he said a alison 1000 something or other, so don't quote me on the type I may be wrong.
