Here's what I did, and keep in mind, mine is a fleetside. The brackets on the stepside are a little different, but one could improvise. First, I got some '80s GM seatbelt latches and welded them to the stake pocket and tailgate. The button part of the latch is on the rear stake pocket and the male part of the seat belt is on the tailgate. It's on there in such a way that when you close the tailgate, the latch latches. I had to grind on the male part as it was not flat but rounded on the side that welds to the tailgate.

Then for the outside (the chain part), I couldn't get the bolts out as they were old and really in there. So I cut it off as flush as I could with a cut off wheel. Turns out this was better than removing the bolt. It gives you a base to use the welder to fill the spot besides an empty hole. I also cut off the bracket on the tailgate where the chain hooks as close to flush as possible with a cutoff wheel. I then ground both brackets and the cut off bolts flush and filled the gaps up with the welder. Then just grind it all smooth. Apply filler if needed.

I imagine you could use filler to fill the holes left after cutting the brackets and bolts if you didn't have access to a welder. You could use something besides seatbelt latches to keep the tailgate closed, like the boat latches (they attach with screws) I saw someone use on theirs. Watch out welding on the tailgate, it's pretty thin where those brackets are. At least mine was. You'll also need something to keep the tailgate from opening too far like some '80s truck tailgate cables. You can get these at Autozone or the like for around $10. I got the seatbelt latches from an old truck cab I scrapped, but you could get them from any junkyard for next to nothing.


My explanation sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. I'll get some pics up and it'll be pretty clear. This was my very first attempt at welding. And it was still super easy. I had a buddy talking me through how to weld, lol. And I can't take credit for the seatbelt latches, I saw it somewhere on here a while back.

That's pretty much the way I did it, but I also welded the button side of the latch instead of bolting it to the stake pocket.

I missed out on the engine that was for sale by me. Final engine choice is not nailed down yet. Here's my short list in no particular order.

Vintage Small Block Chevy
Hop up the existing 235 with split exhaust, two carb intake, and dress up parts
Caddy mill
Old Olds

Probably the least amount of work and money would be either hopping up the 235 or the SBC. When all is said and done, I'd probably have the same money in a runner sbc or the 235 with speed and dress up parts. The 235 does have something going for it that the sbc doesn't though. That is, almost every chevy truck on earth has a sbc.

The caddy or olds would be just for the cool factor. They'd both likely be a lot more expensive. I'm also not sure how motor mounts would work for those. I simply haven't researched it enough yet, but anything can be done with money, lol. Maybe when I get a stack of cash from the '63, I'll be able to seriously think about what I really want to do.

I've got a BBC fuel injected Vortec 8.1 that would give it the "cool factor"

The best thing about that is that it's not anothe sbc. But I love the small block chevys too. There's a reason they're the most popular engine in the world.



Also, I can't believe I haven't even gotten one single email off of craigslist about the truck. I thought I had it priced very fair. I'm kind of happy in a way because if it doesn't sell, I get to keep it. But it's also kind of depressing, I could use the money to make the '55 nice sooner rather than later. Either way will be ok with me. But I had my mind set on selling it (and it was a tough decision), and now it isn't getting any interest, lol. I guess I could have worse problems, like not having any trucks.

I've seen plenty of trucks around here that are nowhere near as nice going for comparable cash- just for comparison, but I don't know what the market is like near you.

How much work/alterations was needed to get that front grill to fit? I have one that I want to put on my '64 was just curious how much time/parts/money I need to set aside. Best of luck selling it this weekend!

The only thing I had to do was drill a couple of extra holes for the mounting bolts. Other than that it's strictly a bolt on affair.
