I know this topic has been around the block and back. I was wondering. Would you cut the dash on "just a driver" ? I know I'm not going to cut my A/C cab that is going on the 71. I plan on putting a cd changer in it. I want to put an Alpine in dash 3 disc changer I have in my 68 driver. I have been debating on building a console to put it in... or mounting it in the glove box ( it has a remote) but all that seems like a bunch of trouble for "just a driver". I'm on the fence with this one... and need a shove one way or the other.

IMO, if it is "just a driver" definitely cut it. If you were restoring to exact specs, keep the original opening.

I wouldn't cut the dash in one of mine, unless the cab was bad enough that it wasn't worth fixing. Mine had the dash cut before I got it, and I really don't like it.

For me to cut the dash on any of my trucks, it would have to meet all of the following criteria.
1) Be a rust bucket (not really worth fixing up, but not toatally rotted / rusted out)
2) Not be an AC cab
3) Be the daily driver
4) Be a low option truck / not a rare truck.

I'm not a fan of cutting the dashes. I know evryone says "there are hundreds of these trucks, they are not rare like Chevelles, Camaros, or Corvettes".
However, I wonder what would it be like if years ago when all those Chevelles, Corvettes were a dime a dozen, people said, "Hell! there are tons of these 67 Camaros! I'm going to cut the dash, chop the top etc..."
Some day soon these trucks will be a rare breed. Just look how popular they are, and how hard it is getting to find a short box Cheyenne Super etc. Hell, now evryone thinks their truck with a new Maico paint job is worth $6,000.
The day is getting near.
I shouldnt sound so preachy however. I would cut the dash if it met the criterea listed above. Sorry for the ramblin'.

I agree that unless you are restoring to factory specifications, you should go for it.

I love my truck for the body style and class that it has, but the modern creature comforts are something I also like.

But again it is just my .02

u cut mine i have a 7 inch flip out tv im gonna put in her but be careful for a din mount radio there will still be small amount of room on the sides i welded mine in and gonna sand it down to make it look original ill take some picts when i get done or you can just come check it out i did this after i painted it duhh,how smart was that,its ok cause i gota respray becouse of the runs anways live and learn huh...Steve

Well this truck isn't a rust bucket, but it is from Maryland, so I think there is more rust there than what is obvious. It is becoming my daily driver. It is a rare truck but not because it is highly optioned... just a rare power plant is all. And it is not an A/C cab. I think I'll slice and dice it, the response to my question has been overwhelmingly one sided. I will do my best to do a professional job. I won't have to work very hard to do a better job than the hack job done on my 71 by the PO. Thanks for the input.

Cut it up.
You can always weld in a repair panel if you decide to go stock. You'll be replacing cab corners with a welder, you can repair the dash with one too.

The morning will be fine if you want to make the trip. Seems fair to me, you travel, I work, I travel you work. .Yeah Steve the weld is holding just fine. I don't expect to have any trouble with it. When I bought my truck. I got home and pulled the radio delete, took a cutting wheel and installed my Alpine. Then went to the cowl and cut a hole in it. If done right, I see nothing wrong with it. Just don't use a chisle or ax.

I had a perfect dash before I cut mine. I had it mounted below the dash with some brackets and the bolts that hold the heater controls in. but I didn't like it there so I cut that thing wide open.
I've never looked back. If I ever really wanted to fix it I would find a cab with tons of rust and weld in a new dash( maybe with ac?)

btw if you have a dremal tool use that, it will by far make the cleanest cuts. and you can clean the metal up with it. just don't use a sawzall
