Exhaust Recommendations?

I need to have the exhaust redone on my 1972 350 long bed. Any recommendations? Ideally, I'd like to be able to hear the engine, and not the exhaust (or at least not too much).

Probably would be a good idea to stay away from headers, big diameter exhaust pipes and some of the less restrictive mufflers like Flowmaster 40 series.

the headers wont change much, the pipe sizes and muffler type will deffinately make or break it.

keep the pipes at 2.5-2.25"

and run a high series flowmaster 70/80/90 or delta flow. they are more expensive but will have a deep muffled rumble.

if not just get some stock type fiberglass packed generic's.

Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers are real mild sounding. Cheap too.

I've recommended the LMC exhaust kit a million times and will again here. For $200 and an afternoon of labor you're done.

The "LMC Kit" is actually manufactured by http://www.heartthrobexhaustinc.com/ and dropped shipped to your door.

Installation on my 4x4 was a breeze. I've never used the 2wd kit.

i had dynomax on my truck before i put my flowmaster 40s on and it was a quiet ride. then when hit it. you could hear the exhaust. but at idle it has a nice quiet rumble

What effect does the diameter of the pipe typically have on performance??

Larger pipes kill more low end torque.

I find smaller pipes like 2 inch or 2.25 inch real good for street driving where almost all usage is under 3500 rpm.

You get benefits on a bit better mileage and bottom end pull. At higher revs, it may cost you a bit of horsepower, but you'll really never notice it. Torque is what you feel.
