an OT power steering question...

I know this is an off topic vehicle, but at least it isnt a f*rd.

So... ive got a 66 impala station wagon in the garage ive been working on for a while, when it showed up the lines were off of the steering box.
i took the lines off of the factory pump that was locked up and put them on a mid 70s truck pump. and now i cant figure out which line goes where
i assume the high pressure line is the "in" and the low pressure (the one with just the hose clamps on it) is the return.

there are two ports on the steering box both on top. one onthe inside and one on the outside...
which one goes where? im afraid of either blowing lines or damaging some equipment, times are tight you know?

I think you're right. Is it possible that the two lines have different fitting sizes? I'm pretty sure my 71 truck has different sizes. Don't know about yours but GM doesn't change much over the years.

Re: an OT power steering question...

well i took the lines off of the 66 pump and put on the 76 pump. (had to change the fittings on back of the pump too). the 76 fittings were too big for the steering box.

what i want to know is which one is in and which one is out on the steering box. so i dont accidentally hook em up backwards and burn something up or burst some lines.

turn it by hand and see which way the oil squirts out (pressure). Just make sure you turn it the same direction as the engine.
