Shifter won't go into R or P

Hi All,

While working on my truck today I couldn't get the shift arm into park or reverse. It goes from Neutral to low with no issues. The column is not hooked up to the transmission or linkage so it has to be an internal issue to the column I presume? Column is from a 70 C10. I was thinking it could be the neutral safety switch might be busted, could that be the problem?

Thanks,
Sam

2scews hold NSS to column take it off and see

or you can try spraying a bunch of lubricant all over all moving parts to see if that frees it up

or its also possible the indicator needle sliped out of alignment

Yes, and when I hit neutral, it feels likeit can go further left but something is preventing it.

Indicator needle is missing but the slot for it is still on the column and that only goes as far as neutral.

Make sure the rod isn't hanging up on something under the truck.

Drive the pin that holds the shift lever in out, & remove the shift lever. Spray WD-40 or equiv. all around in side the hole. Put the lever & pin back in & in neutral pull the lever forward & back. See if it will free up enough to allow you to shift to reverse. If not get underneath to the bottom of the column & there are 2 C shaped clamps with 3 bolts in each one. Remove the center bolts & spray the same penetrant in the holes. Then try working the gearshift forward & back. If this doesn't do it you will have to pull the column & o-haul it.

The original gear shift indicator broke off a while ago and part of it got jammed up in the column. After taking the column out and looking it over, I think it needs a rebuild but is this somrthing I can do on my own? If so does anyone have any instructions on how to do so?

The factory service assembly manual has the instructions in it. You can find the book fairly cheap used ($20 - $30) or any board vendor will have them.
