racing stripes?????

I have 68 swb stepside that is bright red. My friend is trying to talk me into doing flat black racing stripes. Has anyone seen this?? Can you attach photos or message me with where to find them. What do you guys think?

Re: racing stripes?????

Please don't do it, you will regret it later. If you must, go with vinyl that can be removed later. IMO, only factory stripes on these older vehicles have a chance of looking decent.

Re: racing stripes?????

I cant say I'm an outright fan of the racing stripes but in some applications, I've been outright shocked at how good they look.
I'm guessing all you guys against it have also never seen it.
that being said, I totally agree with the vinyl decal, test it out without doing major damage. also stripes on trucks I think get awkward in the bed/tailgate area. what about something just over the hood/cowl?

anyone have the talent to photoshop this for tryout?

Wrong guess. I've seen racing stripes on everything imaginable, including 67-72 trucks and they have never looked good to me. Two tone, yes, stripes, no.

Re: racing stripes?????

I disagree with everyone. If they are authentic design and styling of SS stripes, I would GO FOR IT. I have pondered doing a bright red with white Chevy SS stripes!!

Re: racing stripes?????

there is no such thing as "authentic design" of SS stripes on a 67-72 truck ...

Re: racing stripes?????

I think I understand what Vegaschevy said.I think he means "factory-styled",as in the same design concept as seen on GM cars from this era,way before ricers.I think he meant a phantom SS truck, like if GM actually continued the SS line into trucks. We know that GM never made an SS truck back then,so there would not be an actual authentic SS truck stripe.More like the similar proportions, colors,or where they are located. For instance, narrow stripes would not be authentic-looking.Neither would stripes be on the top. These trucks never came with cowl induction hoods, but many cars that did also had racing stripes. So,it`s natural for some people to wonder how stripes would look on their truck.I don`t think I`d want stripes on my own truck because I like a more sutle style. But,I`ve seen others do this and if it`s done right,as far as having the authentic GM "as if" look, they can look darn good.especially if the style of the rest of the truck carries the theme.or instance,my friend who just built this truck intends on getting car rallyes when he gets enough money.I think this truck captures shades of Camaro in it`s look...

Here`s a few more:

Here`s an "authentic" R/S Indy pace truck:

Re: racing stripes?????

If they layed like a Z or SS, hood and gate only its cool. Not on top!!! As far as stripes go if they are right its a good look. But some likes the '' cookie cutter'' look. If its not stock its not right. Go for it!!!

Re: racing stripes?????

I actually did a small racing strip on a 69 about 3 yrs ago for a customer. It wasn't authentic and I will try to find a pic of it for you.. but it consisted of 2 stripes from hood to tailgate on a longbed. It was an orange truck with white interior with white racing stripe. I did a 5in wide stripe with a 1in wide white stripe on the drivers side of the hood not like typical 2 12inch stripes side by side down center.

I agree if done right it can look ok but...I still like the factory paint options better.

Re: racing stripes?????

My only comment is go to a vinyl graphic business and talk to them... It is amazing what they can do with vinyl these days... There are more colors and finishes than you can imagine... If you never applied large vinyl stripes or graphics let the pros do it... You will be alot happier with the finished product...

Then if you don't like it all you do is pull out the heat gun and your back to original!

Re: racing stripes?????

I vote to not do it.

Maybe it's because I am more of a purist, I just think the OEM paint sceme is best on these trucks.

But, it's your rig - do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy.

Yes, you are right, authentic NON TRUCK SS stripes.

I have been VERY tempted to graft a chevelle cowl induction flapper in to a stock 67 hood for my truck and do racing stripes. VERY TEMPTED. In fact that was my first ideas for paint. It may still happen... who knows.. LOLL

Here is my 71 CHevelle SS with a 502 crate motor and factory Everything.. including AC ! FYI anyone in the phoenix area who knows this Chevelle a guy in Phoenix bought it and he owned a tire and wheel store a few years ago...... Ill buy it back!!!

Re: racing stripes?????

when I had my 72 GMC painted back in the day I told the paint guy I wanted white racing stripes on it. He talked me out of doing it at that time and told me he could add them later. Boy am I glad he talked me out of them!

Re: racing stripes?????

If I was contemplating stripes, I wouldn't go Chevelle SS/ Camaro Z-28 stripes. I would try going with the 1969 camaro SS hockey stick stripes. I think if done right, they could easily work on a pickup and look pretty good. I think out of all the stripes, they could easily transfer to a truck body, but only a sold color truck, or one with a different colored top. That's it, I don't think the Chevelle stripes work on a truck period. I think they look very tacky and low budget, like something I would run if I was in high school. I think something like this modified to fit the fender contours would work better though, if you "had" to have stripes. Trevor

Re: racing stripes?????

My truck is in the body shop, but this is the drawing that I did that at this point will be close to the end look of the truck. Some companies have done the yenko look, and I think it looks pretty good on the trucks. But, this is a drawing, and not on the truck yet!
