Widest drw rear axle
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew what the widest DRW axle GM has ever placed under anything. Including like Grumman box trucks, step vans, HD trucks, 4500, 5500, anything that had DRW. I think some of the step vans and box trucks had larger and wider rear end since they had 19.5 wheels but I'm not sure. I know GM also had a Wide track option, the "GTY" that was on later trucks. Any dimensions or help of any kind would be great. Thanks |

Re: Widest drw rear axle
The rear axle on a dually pickup is 8' total width outside of tire to outside of tire which is, in many/most perhaps all jurisdictions, the widest you can legally go without an overwidth permit. 8' wide requires the 5 cab lights which is why all 1 ton dually pickups came with the cab lights and the 5 red lights across the tailgate. The three in the middle (IIRC) indicate 8' wide. A cab & chassis dually is not as wide. Hope this helps

Re: Widest drw rear axle
yeah that helps some, I was thinking that there were several different sizes rears that gm has used, I know the cab and chassis is shoter than the regular dually axle. I was thinking on the larger box trucks and snap on vans and even the motor homes maybe have been a bit wider. I have a friend that has a newer model 4500 with a flat dump bed and the rear on his truck looks wider than a normal dually rear, but It could be just a trick of the eye.

Legal width is 102" in the States since mid 80's...You might be right about bread trucks and motorhomes; never measured one. But since it would be legal they probably are wider.

Re: Widest drw rear axle
I know that FF14 bolts are 72" for the dually and 70" for the Vans. Thats WMS-WMS. Im not sure what the DANA 70s and DANA 80s widths are. But I think the "GTY" will be your best bet for the widest standard 8 lug axle.

I was thinking the dana 70's and 80's were wider than the gm 14 bolt but not sure on that, does anyone know what the width of the gty or the dana is?

Re: Widest drw rear axle
The 14 bolt ff axle I pulled from my p30 step van was identicle to an axle under a cab and chassis.

Re: Widest drw rear axle
I was refering to the single wheel vans, if its a dually then it'll either be a Standard Dually width axle or a C&C. You can how ever take a 72" dually rear and swap on single rear wheel hubs for 76" WMS-WMS axle, but you would have to figure out your brakes.

Re: Widest drw rear axle
I'm sure you could get a disc brake bracket and make it work.

Re: Widest drw rear axle
I have a D70 dually that's 74" WMS, and a 14ff from an '80 van that is about 69" IIRC. The widest axle I can think of is off a motor home. It won't be a 14ff, Dana 70 or 80, but a 60. Local yard has 1 maybe 2 of them, and even with the tires still on them are friggin' wide....35 spline inners too...

Re: Widest drw rear axle
thats kinda what I was thinking that the p-series axles that they used for the motorhomes and such were wider. I would have thought though that the dana 70 and 80 would have been wider. I saw a large box truck a couple of weeks ago in a parking lot forsale, It had the 19.5 wheels and heavy duty stuff, might stop by and check out the length of the axle on it.
