One piece drive shaft runners
Now that Shane has hooked me up with the shims.....What are your pinion angles on the rear end and trans?????
I think any adjustments I do will help, but never hurts to ask. (Unless I ask the wife for time to work on the trucks, thats another story) Thanks Smitty

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
I'm not totally sure what you are asking?
Is this an extremely lowered truck? Something that makes you think you ned to adjust the angle away from stock? "Ideally" the front and rear should be as close to equal as possible, but it's not necessarily easy to achieve. In stock form the pinion is tilted up a few degrees and the transmission is tilted down an equal amount, so the angles are matched. Lowering with a trailing arm suspension affects the pinion but not the transmission, so "in theory" the pinion needs to be shimmed upward...how much would depend upon a few things. How much drop, LWB or SWB, etc. A problem comes in with shimming though. Tipping the pinion upward affects both angles.....so you have reduced the actual angle of both but done nothing to equalize them to each other. How's that for a long-winded answer for a question I didn't understand?...LOL

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
this is what i got.....
When i did my frame off and put it all back together with oe parts, I had a 1 piece shaft that worked fine, after re-assembly with new springs the pinion angle is too far up and about 60 mph it will shake you out of the truck. the shaft is fine, u joints fine, I want to shim it from the rear thus pushing the pinion angle down. i would like to know who is using a 1 piece shaft and if they have the ability to measure the angles so I can test mine. This truck came with a 2 piece shaft originally. Smitty

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
Its stock ride height, no suspension mods have been done.
If I put the shims in the rear of the axle perchs it will push the angle down. Smitty Read this post to envision the shims..... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=369008

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
I don't understand why your stock height truck would require pinion shims unless something was changed. The difference between 1pc & 2pc shafts shouldn't impact pinion angle. Is it possible the vibration is from the driveshaft itself since longer d.shafts want to flex in the center of the shaft when they exceed a given dimension?
The pinion on the rear should be 'in phase' w/the end of the drivetrain (tranny tailshaft). Everyone's truck will possibly be different so it's best to crawl under your truck & measure w/an angle finder type gauge available from your local Lowes, HomeDepot, or Sears.

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
This sounds like a driveshaft problem not a pinion angle problem. The shaft is bent, out of balance, out of phase.....something.

Re: One piece drive shaft runners
This company
http://www.stockcarproducts.com/trkarm1.htm doesn't make those shims any more. Any one know of another place to get them. I know CPP has them but they are $69 for a pair. Last edited by effects66; 11-17-2009 at 05:18 PM. |
