Question automatic trans conversion question

I have a 4 speed in my truck now and i want to put a turbo 350 in it. what would it take to do that? also would it make a difference if the tranny came out of a car or a truck?? would the tail shaft length matter any?

Re: automatic trans conversion question

Have done this 1 time a long time ago. Biggest concern is the length of the tail shaft length. Other than that, it ain't no challenge. I have a B&M pro shifter in mine. Howard

Re: automatic trans conversion question

You will need:

radiator with trans cooler, or aftermarket trans cooler
trans lines
if column shift an auto column
if floor shift a floor shifter
the shift linkages (dont forget the throttle kick down on the carb)
automatic crossmember
change the flywheel/starter armiture

Also you might have to change the speedo gear or cable. I think just the gear though.

I'm not sure about tailshaft length differences, but you may need to lenghten or shorten the driveshaft accordingly.

Re: automatic trans conversion question

origanals came with the short 6"tailshaft//you also need to remove the crossmember that holds the manual tranny in place

Re: automatic trans conversion question

You'll have to remove the input shaft bushing from end of your crankshaft also.

Re: automatic trans conversion question

Since your changing everything it doesn't mater if you use a long or short output because you'll have to shorten your drive shaft anyway. The 4spd trans is really short compared to the automatics.
By the way you will also need a yoke for the auto output because the 4spd yoke is bolted to its output.
